Mark's obituary
Mark Christopher Drouin, 63 years old, passed away on September 24, 2021 at home in Granby, MA. He was surrounded by family and friends after a short, one-year long, courageous battle with cancer.
Mark was born in Springfield, MA to Ralph and Eileen Drouin. He grew up in Feeding Hills, MA with Robinson State Park abutting the family’s backyard. All the neighborhood kids made forts, explored the woods, bicycled everywhere, played basketball, baseball, and games. They spent all winter playing in the snow, ice skating and sledding. Mary Ellen will always remember Mark as one of her best friends, a fierce competitor and her protector. Geri has fond memories of family holidays and family vacations growing up. She said Mark was always so excited Christmas morning & woke the whole house up to open presents! Both sisters remember the fun times with Mark and their cousins. Growing up there was always a family dog (or two or three) thus sparking his love of dogs! Music was a big part of their childhood with their Mom playing the organ and everyone singing along.
Throughout his adult life he enjoyed going to live concerts and shows as well as rooting for his favorite teams- The Boston Red Sox and The New England Patriots. He also embraced his Irish heritage and dreamed of going to Ireland on his next trip.
He worked on & off at MassMutual during the 1970’s through the 1980’s. Later, he went to Springfield College where he got his degree as a Physical Therapy Assistant. He worked at Weldon Rehabilitation, MVA Center for Rehabilitation, and Comprehensive Physical Therapy in West Brookfield, MA. He enjoyed helping people get well again after surgery and accidents.
After his first cross country cycling trip in 1982, he met Mary Ellen in California and they visited their Dad who was living in Anaheim. Mark and Mary Ellen moved to Santa Barbara and enjoyed camping, going to the beach and cycling. They moved back to Western Massachusetts in 1983. He cycled cross country two different times, cycled in Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii. He continued to ride throughout New England after returning from these long distance trips. On his bike he found a sense of joy, freedom and exhilaration. He logged over 200,000 Life Time cycling miles in his travels around the world! He was an inspiration to many people throughout his lifetime.
Mark married Audrey Morse in 1994 and although they separated they remained close and shared their love for their adored dog Igor, “the big fella”.
He had numerous friends, especially his longtime friend Sandy who cared for him and remained by his side throughout his illness. In addition, his dear friends John, George, Jimmy, Mario, Cindy, and many others. In his free time he was passionate about hiking, biking, camping, and being outdoors with them. So many people considered him their “best friend”. He was blessed to have so many kind and caring people in his tribe!
He enjoyed spending time with his sisters and his 5 nieces and nephews; Corey, Kaylie, Kevin, Shannon, and Patrick. As well as 4 Great nieces and nephews. He was their favorite Uncle and always made them laugh, “The Fun Uncle”.
Mark charted his own course in life. He had a smile for everyone along with a kind heart and gentle soul. His fun loving demeanor will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Please consider donating blood in Mark's memory. He received many blood transfusions over the last year allowing us to have more time with him. Also consider other donations in Mark's honor to Thomas J. O’Connor Animal Adoption Center in Springfield MA and Dana Farber Institute.
