Mark's obituary
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Mark "The Gunny" Atterbury on January 21, 2024. Born on December 5, 1960, Mark, or "The Gunny", as he was affectionately known, brought light, love, and laughter into the lives of all who knew him.
Mark is survived by his beloved wife, Tammy, and their cherished children; Brent, Andrew, Susie, Bethany, Christina, Emily and Ryan, along with his five grandchildren Evan, Jane, Jude, Ezra, and Lyra. He was an adored figure who cherished his family above all else. His spirit of protection and devotion will forever linger in the hearts of his loved ones.
A man of faith, Mark was a regular attendee of the Hope Evangelical Free Church who found peace and wisdom throughout his spiritual journey. He had an eclectic taste in music, with The Beatles topping his list of favorites. His favorite films included classics like The Godfather and Oliver! In his leisure time he enjoyed playing card games like poker with his brothers and hearts with his wife. A family gathering was not complete unless Mark had croquet setup for an epic battle with some of the best commentary coming from him and his brothers.
Mark's adventurous spirit led him to enjoy activities such as traveling the world and playing Beat Saber on his Oculus. Running was his preferred mode of exercise, reflecting his energetic personality. He was known for his warmth, focus, and infectious humor, always being the first to crack a joke and light up a room.
Mark's greatest life lessons included teaching others the values of availability and protection. His professional career featured 20 proud years of service with the United States Marines, but his personal achievements held the greatest meaning to him – a love affair spanning 46 years with Tammy and being a source of protection and joy for his children and grandchildren.
Mark's legacy is one of passion and strength. His absence leaves a void that can never be filled. However, his zest for life, his steadfast love for his family, and his innate ability to inspire others to be their best will forever be remembered. Rest in peace, Mark. You will be dearly missed.
