Mark's obituary
Mark Alan Smith died unexpectedly on Saturday, April 16. His wife of nearly twenty-three years, Connie Marie Smith, his family, and his friends are stunned and deeply saddened by his sudden passing.
Mark was at a business function in Nashville when he suffered a medical emergency which caused him to lose consciousness. He fell forward, fracturing the left side of his skull from his occipital bone (in the back of his head) to both jaws—and multiple fractures in between. He arrived conscious at the Vanderbilt Hospital’s ER. Within ninety minutes, Mark’s status changed. The medical team placed him on a ventilator, and a new CT scan revealed massive brain hemorrhaging.
Connie arrived in time to be at his bedside when he passed.
Mark was preceded in death by his mother, Catherine Louis Smith (nee Theiss), of Affton, MO and his father, Kenneth Smith, of Oakville, MO. Mark is survived by his wife, Connie Smith, her sons: Jason (Tammy) Emerson, Aaron (Emily) Emerson, and Andrew (Allyson) Emerson, grandchildren: Colin, Ella, Johnny, Sara, Michael, Ellie, Archie, Miles, and Wyatt.
Mark was born in St. Louis, Missouri on July 18, 1956, and attended Affton High School. He graduated from Maryville University with his B.S.N. and later earned his C.N.N. (Certified Nephrology Nurse). He lived a life of seeing the sacred in all. He especially treasured animals for their beautiful teachings and humorous ways. He loved family and never missed a gathering if it was in his power to be there. He was an avid St. Louis’ sports fan and attended many Blues and Cardinals’ games – both home and away.
Mark’s position as a Medical Support Specialist at Fresenius Medical Care required him to travel regularly, giving him ample opportunity to make friends all over the U.S. and to visit with nieces and nephews who had moved out of state.
Mark’s life was one of abundance—in the truest sense of the word - abundance in love, abundance in relationships. He allowed every living thing to be just who/what they are…no change required, expected, or demanded. He was always grateful for growth; however it came.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at the St. Louis Zoo on June 12.
