Marjorie's obituary
Dr. Marjorie R. Hendler, PhD, died at the age of 100 after living a long and meaningful life. An ardent feminist, she was a pioneer in the women’s rights movement as well as a leader in the fight for quality integrated education during the civil rights movement. A lifelong teacher and learner, she was a graduate of Brooklyn College, and later received her doctoral degree from NYU at the age of 52, publishing her thesis on sex-role stereotyping in children’s literature. Dr. Hendler was a longtime respected professor in the School of Education at CUNY Queens College, where she taught early childhood education and multi-cultural literature and served as liaison between the college and the NY city public schools.
Predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Samuel Hendler, she leaves behind her 3 beloved children – William (Emma) of Northport, NY; James (Terry Horowit-Hendler) of Albany, NY; and Elizabeth (Ted Wynne) of Harvard, MA; her cherished grandchildren - Sharone, Leigh, David, Robert and Avigail, as well as her sister, Jane (Marty) Schwartz of Port Washington, NY, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
