Mario's obituary
Mario valued his friends and family above all else in the world. He touched the lives of so many people wherever he went, from Manila, Philippines, where he was born, to NY and NJ, where he and his wife, Cindy, raised their family. During his time growing up in the Blue Ridge subdivision in Manila, his grade school and high school years in San Beda University, and his college years at the University of the Philippines, he built a reputation as a fiercely loyal friend who often got into a bit of trouble (his daughters would be interested in hearing the uncensored versions of the stories about their dad someday).
While street smart and savvy, Mario was also a respected professional. Throughout his over 30-year career at the United Nations Development Programme, he demonstrated his strong work ethic and rose through the ranks, while continuing to make lasting friendships along the way. He also loved to share his interests with others and forged many strong bonds with fellow golfers, fishers, basketballers, boxing enthusiasts, and food lovers (he made a mean bacalao, callos, and paella, inspired by his own dad’s culinary skills).
Most central to his life was Mario’s family. As one of eight children, he grew up in a large, loving household. Through his deep relationships with each of his seven siblings, he showed his daughters by example what it means to put family first. With frequent trips across the U.S., Canada, and the Philippines (which was not easy as a family of six), Mario’s daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren are now blessed with strong bonds with aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends – a whole community of love built for them by Mario and Cindy.
Mario is preceded in death by his father, Antonio J. Cuna. He is survived by his wife, Cindy; daughters, Tricia Cuna Weaver, Andrea Cuna Bennett, Serena Cuna Murphy, and Gabriele Cuna; sons-in-law, William Weaver, Steven Bennett, and Kevin Murphy; grandchildren, Bodhi Bennett, Alexander Weaver, and Logan Murphy; mother, Julieta P. Cuna; siblings, Mary Rose Frial, Antonio Cuna Jr., Mary Anne Cuna, Elisa Abalos, Val Cuna, Celeste Chaffaut, and Mari Azarcon; their spouses; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
