Marie's obituary

Marie Peckham born Karen Joyce Marie Kjervestad (age 71) passed away peacefully on Monday, September 3, 2018. Marie was comforted by her daughters, Chelsea Peckham Vargas and Jasset Peckham Worrell in her last moments. In the days before her passing, Marie spent time with her grandchildren; other family members’ and close friends.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband Delmas Edward Peckham, her son Joshua Lee Peckham, a sister Della May Verdallas Lindeman, father Albert T. Kjervestad, a brother Joseph Dumont, brother-in-law Cletus Henry Poitra, mother Mildred C. Dumont (Beaver), her brother Leroy Albert Kjervestad, a brother Dennis Frederick, nephew Clarence John Enno (CJ) and brother in law, James Melvin Enno.

Marie is survived by her eldest son Edward Joseph James Peckham, daughters Chelsea Marie Peckham Vargas and Jasset Louise Peckham Worrell ( Cody Worrell) and her grandchildren Haylee Angel Cross (partner Gunner Everett), Baylee Ann Cross ( partner Zach Carter), Marissa Isabella Vargas, Jackson Cody Worrell, Xavi Cesc Vargas, and Emmitt McCrae Worrell. She is also survived by sisters; Patty Eller, Betty Poitra, Gwendolyn T. (Kjervestad) Enno, and several nieces and nephews; for which she had special bonds.

There were many people in her life that were special including her daughter-in-law, Staci Ann Lusk; son-in laws Jerry Cross and Marco Vargas; Jamie East and Leann Newman. She had special relationships with The Zura family of Rolette, North Dakota, local Tulsa family Dean and Vesta VanTrease, Sister Eugenia of Saint Joseph’s Monastery (Tulsa, Ok.) and all the staff at Wards Garage in West Tulsa. Marie was known for her will, political stances and her outspokenness, she spent many of afternoons and evenings in deep conversations with her son in law Cody Worrell (Jasset); these conversations were shared moments of passion for different views and the freedom of speech.

Marie was born on August 23, 1947, in Belcourt, North Dakota and grew up in nearby small town of Rolette. She attended the local high school and after graduation she took classes in journalism at a nearby community college. Marie was a member of The Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians and proud of her Native American culture. She told many stories to her children about the “Great Spirit” and although she had a close relationship with Catholicism, God and Jesus she walked the path of spiritualism finding strength in nature. Marie was known to listen and take cues from her mother earth; following the signs from the rain, sun, snow and wind. She found peace in the changing of the seasons, feeling the most comfort in fall and winter.
As for her career, Marie was a creative and diligent writer, who took pride in her poems, personal quotes and sayings; short stories, and her handwriting. For work, she spent time in many trades, but was best known for her home painting (internal and external), home repair and remodeling, she could also diagnose a car problem by hearing alone.
Marie was full of wanderlust and spent many hours driving throughout several states. She would drive hours to see her family in Indiana, then to Minnesota, Kansas, and North Dakota and back “home” to Oklahoma. She love to be near nature, and would often be found camping near the Oklahoma lakes.

The second chapter of the Book of Genesis speaks to the creation of mankind. “Then the Lord God formed the manout of the dust of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being” (2:7). In Marie’s Catholic faith, and her connection to her Native American spiritualism it was her wish to cremated and returned to her mother earth and in her faith she would say, “earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust.”
There will be Memorial Service for Marie, Saturday September 22, 2018 from 2pm to 5pm at The Church That Matters in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. The family invites you to bring your memories and stories of Marie to be shared in a casual setting at The Church That matters.
