Ise's obituary

Marie-Luise "Ise" Gesine Hilde Fokken MacDonald, 87, of Eustis, Maine, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2026, in Lynnfield, Massachusetts. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Thomas L. MacDonald, and is survived by her two sons: Micah MacDonald and his wife, Anna, of Springfield, Virginia, and Duncan MacDonald and his husband, Kevin Hashem, of North Reading, Massachusetts; as well as her two cherished grandchildren, Joseph and Alexandra.

Born in Wulkenzin, Germany, on April 20, 1938, she was the daughter of Albert and Charlotte (Wellbrook) Fokken. Ise attended Neubrandenburg High School and graduated from Kinderkrankenhaus Rothenburgsort in Hamburg, Germany, as a registered nurse in 1963. The following year, she immigrated to the United States, seizing an opportunity that would define the rest of her life. Arriving with a vocabulary consisting only of "Yes," "No," and "Thank you," she cleverly learned English from the children she cared for while volunteering in the pediatric ward at Maine Medical Center in Portland. She subsequently worked as a nurse's aide at Webber Hospital in Biddeford from 1965 to 1967.

Ise’s journey with her husband began in 1966 after they were matched through an early form of punch-card computer dating. Married in Saco on May 1, 1967, they lived briefly in Stratton before settling in Coburn Gore, where they raised their two sons.

As their children grew, Ise was a devoted mother and community member: she volunteered by teaching German to elementary students, chaperoned the ski school program for a decade, and served as president of the Stratton Parent-Teacher Club for several years. Her professional career was equally distinguished. Appointed as a postmaster replacement in 1977, she later became the Eustis postmaster in September 1987. Her tenure furthered a remarkable legacy, ensuring the Eustis postmaster position remained in the MacDonald family, as it had been since October 1949.

Following her husband’s retirement in 1995, the couple moved to a house they built along the Dead River in Eustis. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, she shared a poignant journey back to her childhood home in the former East Germany, marking her first return since immigrating to the United States.

In the years that followed, she fully embraced a spirit of adventure, traveling the world with curiosity and joy. Her journeys took her across continents: from the plains of Tanzania to visit her father’s birthplace, to biking along the Danube River, sailing through the majestic Norwegian fjords, and even taking a helicopter ride to land on an Alaskan glacier.

Though she officially retired in the fall of 2006, Ise remained fiercely active in her community. She participated in the local Meals on Wheels program, taught fitness to fellow seniors, and brought joy as the "Tale Twister" for the Lions Club. Proving her lifelong determination, she earned her black belt in American GoJu Karate in March 2003, eventually achieving a third-degree rank.

A lover of teddy bears, she was a familiar and friendly sight walking, biking and cross-country skiing throughout the Stratton-Eustis area.

Following a car accident in 2023, failing health prevented her from enjoying the active lifestyle she loved so much. Her family misses her greatly, but they find immense comfort in her peace and freedom.

"Nicht weinen, weil sie vorüber! Lächeln, weil sie gewesen!" ("Do not cry because they are past! Smile, because they once were!") —Ludwig Jacobowski, German poet

A memorial service honoring Ise's life will be held later this spring in Eustis, Maine. In her memory, gifts may be made to the Stratton School or UNICEF.
