Hello Friends. We are pleased to report that on August 13, Woodside Village Unit #6 was dedicated in honor of Marie B. Allen "in gratitude for her invaluable contribution to the development of affordable elderly housing on Martha's Vineyard". Our mother served on the Island Elderly Housing Board of Directors from 2010-2020.

Happy Mother's Day to my mother and to all of her friends who are mothers.

February 2024
It’s been a year since my mother transitioned from this physical life to be with my father, family, friends, and ancestors. The past year has felt like both a long time and like yesterday and I still have the pain and sadness from this loss. After re-reading her memoirs, I have an even greater appreciation of her fearlessness and leadership in her many efforts to address racism, homelessness, women’s health, and other injustices. She had a love for her family, and encouraged, pushed, and supported me to go to college and graduate school and had the foresightedness to enable my sister and I to live on Martha’s Vineyard.

Mother’s (and fathers) are special and I will always be grateful that I had and still have a special one. After leaving her last job, my mother frequently told me that she was not ‘retired’ but ‘refired’. I want to use that example for myself and continue her legacy.

In 2024, we continue to face challenges that limit our individual and collective abilities to be our best selves, especially for the oppressed and underserved. My mother would want us to be ‘active citizens’ not only for us in the United States, but throughout the world. Please vote, get involved, contribute, advocate, and love each other.

My mother had many friends and I have greatly appreciated the outpouring of your love and support. I thank you all for your prayers and thoughtfulness and hope that your memories of my mother will continue.
