My colleague in the mail room, Mike, wanted to wear a tie on his birthday (in April). Having just purchased a nice new Sears suit, myself, I thought it was a capital idea.
Riding to work on the bus, I realized that people would ask, "Hey! What's with the suit?" So I came up with a story about the day being International Mailboy Dignity Day, as decreed by the World Congress of Mailboys in Brussels in 1948, and so on. The suits? Why that was in anticipation of being feted at a swanky San Francisco restaurant for lunch!
Mari could not let that pass. She and Linda (Reuben Hills's secretary) got the company to shell out for a lunch date for us mailboys. They took us to the Doggie Diner at Fourth and Townsend, across from the SP railroad station, and let each of us enjoy the Most Expensive Items on the menu, and on the company's dime!
I have been chuckling about the way Mari called our bluff for almost fifty years.
She was absolutely great! Had I been more mature and self-confident in those days, I could have wooed her.

Mari and I were co-workers at Hills Bros in 1975. She was a pretty young woman, and such a a fun person! I have often reminisced warmly of her, and am so saddened to learn of her passing.
