Marian's obituary
Marian C. Eckstein
September 1954 - May 1, 2025
Marian (Shanahan) Eckstein (70) of Hillsboro, Oregon, formerly of Columbus, Ohio, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on May 1, 2025. Born the fifth of six children, she grew up enjoying her focus on family, singing, and dreaming of becoming a teacher, a role she later cherished with her children and grandchildren.
Marian attended both Bishop Hartley and Eastmoor high schools, graduating in 1972. She then married Thomas Joseph Eckstein, Sr. They resided in Gahanna, Ohio for many years, raising five children on seven acres in the country. She enjoyed staying home with her young children, traveling for her children's dance competitions, chaperoning school field trips, taking long summer family road trips, and eventually going back to work and becoming a team supervisor. Marian was supportive of all her children's many activities, encouraging strong academics, nurturing individual talents, and sending all of her children to a local university.
With an empty nest at home, Marian went on to study medical records management, relocated to the Portland, Oregon area, and became a release of information specialist for over a decade. She enjoyed more road trips with her younger children and grandchildren, along with crocheting, reading and writing, and enjoying much time with her grandchildren during retirement.
Marian is survived by her daughters Christine (Kilian) Bartsch of Palatine, IL, Elizabeth Eckstein, and Laura (Jason) Wells of Hillsboro, OR; her sons Thomas Eckstein, Jr. of Bradenton, FL, and Nicholas Eckstein of Hillsboro, OR; and her four grandchildren, Caitlyn, Aidyn and Logan Wells, and Lorelei Bartsch; her sister Anne, and brothers Raymond, Dennis, and Thomas. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Raymond and Anne Marie (Hines) Shanahan, and brother Christopher.
A celebration of Marian's life will be held Tuesday, July 22 at Spring Hollow Lodge, Sharon Woods, W. Main St., Westerville, OH 43081 at 1pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to St. Jude Research Hospital, Kiwanis Doernbecher Children's Cancer Program, or the American Diabetes Association.
And as Marian would often say, "Remember the memories."
