Mariam's obituary

In Loving Memory of

Mariam Roe Rueff

September 1, 1938 – January 15, 2026

Mariam was a larger-than-life presence, a woman whose warmth filled every room, and whose friendship was a gift to so many.

She was a trusted and dependable friend, generous with her time, her laughter, and her care. But above all, Mariam was a devoted and loving Mimi, whose greatest joy was found in her grandchildren: Hannah Schuster (Glenn), Stephanie Day (Rob), Taylor Schuster, Olivia Schuster, Evie Schuster (Josh), and Emilie Tally (Kenny); and her cherished great-grandchildren, Will and Poppy Day. Her love for them was unmistakable, constant, nurturing, and overflowing.

Her support extended beyond her family to her friends and her community.  She served as PTA President and was one of the founders of the Crescent Hill Athletic Association in the 1970s. She loved hosting big Derby Day celebrations and other parties throughout the years, making sure everyone was laughing and having a good time.

She was a graduate of the Class of 1956 at Atherton High School, and served as Reunion Chairman up until their 50th reunion. She reconnected and maintained many old and new relationships through her work on this committee that she cherished.

She served as the payroll clerk at Metro Parks in Louisville for 17 years, where she gained many lifelong friends. Up until her death, she stayed connected with daily texts, calls, or surprise greeting cards in the mail - always checking in and making sure friends knew she was thinking of them.

She loved sporting events and cheering from the stands (especially when one of her children was on the field), and she was an avid University of Louisville basketball fan! She loved sitting on the beach and was blessed to be able to have that experience one more time just 4 months ago on her final visit to Florida.

As a lifelong resident of Crescent Hill, Mariam was preceded in death by her parents, Uta "Tobby" Hutchinson McDonald and Everett W. Roe, her sister Suzanne Roe, and her husband Jim Rueff.

She is survived by her three children, on whom she loved doting: Donna, Doug (Susan), and Tommy (Hallie) Schuster, as well as her grandchildren. In her final years, they did their best, collectively doting back on her so she could continue living independently and enjoying her friends and family.

Mariam walked through life with deep comfort in the presence of the Lord, trusting in His guidance and resting in His care for herself and for all those she loved. That faith was her anchor, her strength, and her peace.

Though she is no longer with us in body, her love remains woven into our lives, a lasting reminder that a life rooted in love never truly ends.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during a visitation from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at Beargrass Christian Church, 4100 Shelbyville Road, Louisville, KY 40207. A memorial service in her honor will follow at 4:00 p.m. at the church. Reception details to be announced. Private burial at Cave Hill Cemetery will be held the following day.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her honor to places she supported through the work of her children and grandchildren: Blueprint502, Bridgehaven Mental Health Services, or Hand in Hand Ministries.
