Maria's obituary
Maria Escobar Chavez, of Albuquerque, NM, went peacefully to rest on June 18, 2024, at 97 years old. Maria was a beloved mother, grand-mother, great-grandmother, mother-in-law, aunt, great-aunt, cousin, sister, friend, and loyal servant to God. Her industrious, independent, outgoing, and gracious spirit earned her the love and respect of her community.
Maria was born near San Antonio, Texas on April 8, 1927, to Teresa Angiano and Pilo Escobar. She is preceded in death by many beloved family members including ten of her thirteen siblings. She is survived by three of her sisters, Ruth, Alejandra, and Angie.
Maria and Reies Lopez Tijerina married in 1946 and were blessed with six children. The family settled in Albuquerque, NM and Maria remained there until her passing. Maria is preceded in death by three of her six children, Daniel, David and Rachel. She leaves behind two daughters, Rose and Della, and one son, Noah. Maria had 17 grandchildren and many great grandchildren all whom she adored and cared for as her own. Maria’s family and friends filled her life with joy and purpose. As a young woman she graduated from bible school and established an unbreakable bond with her faith. Even in the hardest of times through all the decades of her life, she remained dedicated to her faith. Maria was active in many spiritual groups and did not discriminate when it came to the love and worship of her Lord and Savior. She believed in love, kindness, and acceptance for all and was known for helping every person she was able to. Maria was gifted in gardening, cooking, baking, sewing, art, and music. No one will ever forget her homemade tortillas, breakfast papas, fresh mint tea, and grape juice. She also loved animals and cared for many abandoned pets throughout her life. Her generosity, kindness, quiet peacefulness, grace, and fantastic sense of humor will be remembered by all who knew her. If ever there was a place to feel safe and loved, it was with her. Maria will be honored, forever remembered, and missed deeply by her family and friends.
