Marguerita's obituary
Marguerita Sam, also lovingly called “nanny” by her family was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend who passed away on December 6, 2023, at the age of 78. She was born on May 24, 1945, to Carlos Rivera Capo and Beryl Kathleen Cornell in the UK in the town of Petersfield. At three years old she would move to New York City in 1948 with her mother.
On May 27, 1961, she married Moses Sam Sr. and had three beautiful children. Marguerita is survived by Catherine (Michael) Washington, Moses (Iris) Sam, and Peter (Kathy) Sam; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Marguerita also has a host of cousins that are living in the United Kingdom.
She started her work experience within the insurance industry in New York City, where she met a lifelong friend (Roberta Smith) who would help her begin her lifelong relationship with Jehovah’s Witnesses. Marguerita soon began to study the Bible in 1973 and 6 months later would be baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on June 1, 1974. From the time she learned about Jehovah, she had a strong desire to help others learn about him and his promises for the future. This love motivated Marguerita to become a Regular Pioneer, spending her time in the house-to-house ministry, and conducting Bible Studies. Her zealous spirit led her to do much in Jehovah’s service including volunteering with the Local Design Construction team (LDC) in the kitchen, feeding many friends, and supporting various projects. She did not stop there, her interest in learning a foreign language was always something she desired to do and eventually joined the Portuguese foreign language congregation in Kissimmee, Florida.
In 1981, Marguerita moved to Virginia Beach, VA to care for her mother. There she would continue caring for her two sons while continuing to build relationships with many of her brothers and sisters in the Windsor Oaks Congregation. She would remain in Virginia until 1997 when she would move back to New York to help her daughter, Catherine care for her two children. She stayed with her daughter and son-in-law moving to Phoenixville, PA in 2003. Through those years Marguerita continued her strong connection to Jehovah’s people as a member of the Port Washington Congregation in Long Island, NY, and the Phoenixville Congregation in Phoenixville, PA. It was in the Phoenixville Congregation where Marguerita would finally fulfill her goal of becoming a Regular Pioneer in 2013.
Many will remember her love for the arts. As a young woman, she would go to the Apollo, she loved dancing, seeing musicals, and listening to Opera. Marguerita loved swimming and, in the summer, could often be found at the pool doing laps for exercise. Marguerita was known for being a natural caregiver to those around her. She cared for her grandchildren during their adolescent years along with many other children who fondly remember her for her patience and love. She instilled her love for the arts into the children she cared for, teaching them to knit and crochet, giving piano lessons, also cooking, and teaching them to bake.
Marguerita was a faithful servant of Jehovah till the day of her death, even witnessing to one of her nurses the day before her passing. As the only person in her family to serve Jehovah, her faithful example has impacted her children and grandchildren as many now also are servants of Jehovah God. While we wait to see her again in God’s new world the words at 2 Timothy 4:7 truly apply to Marguerita. 'She has fought the fine fight, she has run the race to the finish, she has observed the faith.’
The funeral will take place on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at 1:00 PM at the South English Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Located at 1675 Jack Calhoun Dr., Kissimmee, FL 34741.
