Margaret's obituary
Margaret Louise Culbertson, born on September 30th 1943, in Oil City, Pennsylvania, is now at rest after a 30 year battle with Renal Cell Carcinoma. She died peacefully at home, in FL, with her two devoted daughters by her side. Her strength, bravery, and resilience were only outmatched by her kindness and ever loving heart. Despite the decades long challenges, Margaret or "Margie" as many called her, lived a wonderful life, fulfilled by family, friends, pets, and her lifelong passion for the arts.
Margaret herself, earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Carnegie Mellon University, and her Master's in Art Education from the University of Pittsburgh. She was an acclaimed ceramicist, whose hand created pieces brought her immense joy, and the admiration and appreciation of so many. Her works adorn homes around the nation, and she will live on in the smiles that they bring. As a member of the Ceramics League of Miami, Margaret discovered a community of kindred spirits, who became a meaningful part of her life. She loved nature, which was always reflected in her art. She was buoyed by her many cherished friends, old and new, whom she loved dearly, was enamored with her cadre of pets, but mostly she found comfort, solace, and love, in the presence of her beloved family, who will miss her every single day.
Margaret participated in clinical trials with the University of Miami's Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, which does important research in the ongoing fight against kidney cancer (among a host of other types of cancer) and the search for effective treatment and an eventual cure. We are forever grateful for their years of compassionate care and support. She was always so proud to be a member of their team. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Jaime Merchan, Ana Harwood, and Dr. Gregory Azzam, for their longtime, exceptional care.
Margaret was preceded in death by her father, William Lawrence Culbertson, her mother, Margaret Mary Inglis Culbertson, her brother, Robert Lawrence Culbertson, her sister, Mary Ann Culbertson and sister-in-law, Paula Culbertson. She is survived by her two daughters, Jane Alu Valinsky, and Nina Alu, her son-in-law James Osterberg, her grandson Joshua Valinsky, sister-in-law, Mary Lou Culbertson, two nephews, Chris & Greg Culbertson, nieces Holly Culbertson and Laura Culbertson, great nephew and great niece, Connor Culbertson and Skylar Gore, great nephew Evan Culbertson, great nieces Ella and Elise Culbertson...also many loving friends and neighbors. She was adored by everyone who knew her. A private memorial to celebrate Margaret's life will be announced at a time in the future. Donations in her name, to cancer research or an animal rescue group, or even thinking of Margie while performing a small act of kindness, would mean so much. Thank you everyone. She loved you all.
