Margaret's obituary

Margaret Helen Chitty, formerly Vakil, née Shechmeister, passed away peacefully at home on May 27th, 2024 at 81. She was preceded in death by her beloved brother, Bryan Shechmeister.

Born in Berkeley, California, Margaret came of age in Carbondale, Illinois, where her father taught microbiology at Southern Illinois University. She returned to the city of her birth to study Sociology at the University of California, graduating in 1965, and later went on to earn her Master's in Accounting from SIU. Margaret applied her skills for the IRS in the San Francisco Bay Area, and subsequently for SIU in Carbondale. After many years of faithful service, she finally settled in Madison, Wisconsin.

An avid Bridge player, Margaret participated in tournaments hosted by the American Contract Bridge League, and achieved the status of Gold Life Master. When not competing, she enjoyed bonding with loved ones over friendly Bridge games throughout her life. Margaret delighted in reading mystery novels by the likes of Agatha Christie and Sue Grafton, and doted on her cats, most recently Teddy, with whom she spent sixteen wonderful years.

Margaret was a devoted mother to David and Stephen Vakil; adoring grandmother to Olivia Vakil and Joshua Casper; cherished mother-in-law to Carolee Vakil-Jessop and Shannon Vakil; dear cousin to Tom Frisbie, Dick and Janet Frisbie, and John and Marcia Frisbie; treasured sister-in-law to Ann M. Arvin; and beloved aunt of Matthew and Timothy Shechmeister.

She will be laid to rest in her native San Francisco Bay. In lieu of flowers, kindly send an honorary donation to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
