Marcia's obituary

Marcia Renee’ Payne was born to the union of Robert Norman New and Charlesetta Lynn on January 29, 1956. She was the youngest of their two daughters. Renee’ graduated from Walnut Hills High School in 1974. Renee’ accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior when she was nine years old and was baptized at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. She later joined Union Baptist Church when she was eleven years old and continued to be a very active member. She was a faithful member of Sunday School and the Noon-Day Bible Study Class. She was the Assistant Church Clerk who eloquently wrote resolutions to the families of the deceased. Her newest role was as a volunteer for the Summer Food Program.

Renee’ began working for Duke Energy (formerly Cincinnati Gas and Electric Company) when she was 19 years old as a data entry clerk. She worked there for 37 years until retiring in 2013.

Renee’ loved the performing arts. She began dancing in elementary school under Ms. Bobbie Corbein. This love for dance help to foster her formation of the Glory Girls Praise Dance Ministry at Union Baptist Church. Renee’ was an avid singer; a powerful first soprano. She sang in many choirs at Union Baptist Church including the Youth Choir, Spirimelodaires, Sanctuary Choir, Word of Life Choir, Grace, and Sisters in Christ. She also sang in community choirs including the Duke Energy Choir, the Loretta Mangrum Chorale, the 9th Street Baptist Church Choir that recorded with Elder Rodney Posey and in Classical Roots with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.

Rennie, as she was affectionately called by family and friends, was an integral part of the Youth Ministry of Union Baptist Church for over 20 years. She was an advisor to the Youth Choir where she spent most of her Saturdays picking up and dropping off teenagers throughout the city to get to and from rehearsal. She was also an advisor of the Hattie B. Jackson Guild Girls which sprouted the Glory Girls Praise Dance Ministry. Under Rennie’s leadership, the Glory Girls traveled throughout the city of Cincinnati ministering through dance at other churches and community events such as the Black Family Reunion. She taught teenage girls how to become God-fearing, young ladies not afraid to praise to the Lord. Rennie was most proud of the beautiful, successful, spirit-filled women all her “girls” had become.

Not only was Rennie a mentor and advisor, but she was the “aunt extraordinaire.” She was ALWAYS there for her nieces (Raven and Amber) and nephew (Shannon). And she was the honorary aunt to all of their friends. She was their “Momtie” -second mom and auntie.

Renee’ is survived by the father who raised her, Adolphus Lynn, Jr.; her sister, Norma Cheryl New; her nephew, Shannon Russell Jackson (Jamila); her niece, Dr. Raven A. Spratley (Richard); two dear cousins, Adrienne Pogue and Amber Norman (Bennie); five great nephews- Michael Starks, Jr., Jaden Richardson, Shane Britton, Nathan Jackson, and Josiah Spratley; two great-nieces- Isabella Jackson and Raina Spratley; special family friend and sister, Renita Foster; and a host of family and friends.
