Marc was in Corpus Christi in the late 80's to interview for the new scout executive for the Gulf Coast council of Boy Scouts. I was on the hiring committee. Of course the scouts have a very complete hiring process. there were 4 scouts that made the the final interview . Gayle and I took Marc and Freda to dinner for an informal interview. Don't remember where. We had a lot in common- hunting, fishing and scouting.I knew that night he was the one for the job. I as very supportive of his nomination. He got the job.
I ended up being council president and worked together for the years he was here. Marc was always very organized, calm(never saw him mad), strong leader.
Marc started hunting on the Ojo De Agua pasture on the King Ranch and I was on the Don Ricardo. Both very close to Corpus. Great quail, dove, deer, hogs, everything. we started hunting quail together. Marc had a Isuzu Trooper he bought from me and a dog box trailer. Always had great dogs. Kept the dogs with Luther Young, a quail guide and good friend of ours.
Marc eventually moved to the airport pasture on the King Ranch and I moved to the La parra pasture on the Kenedy Ranch, Both spectacular quail pastures. We spent A LOT of time on both.Great hunting, cooking, campfires. Marc soon moved to Kentucky.
I ended up on the jones Ranch (still there). The ranch is 400,000 acres and lease 8,000. Marc and his brother David quail hunting there and we had a few days of unbelievable amount of birds. Our guide was Hugo Ford. The sports editor for the corpus caller times wanted to do a spread on quail hunting. He wrote a front/full page story of our hunt. Very special.
Marc and Freda invited us to spend most of the Derby week with them. Makers Mark party, Riverboat race, Several private parties, The Oaks and of course the Derby. To this day one of the greatest trip/adventure we've ever done. Very gracious hosts.
We weren't around Marc much after his move to Kentucky, but I know he loved to quail hunt. I know those were some of his best days on earth.
