Marc's obituary
It is with profound sorrow that the family of Marc A. Gordon, O.D., informs you of his sudden passing.
Dr. Gordon arrived in Stuart, Florida in 1989 from Staten Island, New York. He graduated from Martin County High School in 1993, received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Florida Atlantic University and achieved the President's List for a perfect GPA. He then went on to graduate from Nova Southeastern where he excelled in his studies, was a member of the Beta Sigma Kappa International Optometric Honor Society all four years, and its President in his third year, and was granted his Optometric Physician degree, with honors.
Marc joined the music program while still in Staten Island, and played French Horn in various school and community bands including New York's All-City Orchestra (with his sister) and played at Carnegie Hall. While at Martin County High School the band went up to New York City to march in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. He formed some lifelong friendships through his love of music, and he continued playing while studying at Indian River Community College on a music scholarship. Ah, to hear him play that Mozart piece.
He met Danielle while working in New York and they wed in 2011 and had one child, Mason, who brings them great joy. Seeing Marc and his son together defined that special father-son bond.
Once they settled in Naples, he began a new artistic venture, that of lampwork glass bead making. This hobby occupied many hours of delight, sometimes frustrating, even the occasional "oops." He found so much enjoyment in this and progressed in his skill and creations to making many beautiful beads, small figurines and jewelry. He was an avid S.C.U.B.A. diver and a Master Mason.
Professionally, his gift for very exacting refractions pleased his patients and he received many compliments on his skills from colleagues, what Marc referred to as "the necessity for being precise." Dr. Gordon has participated both in the community and has taken his skills abroad to Paraguay where he volunteered on a "Gift of Sight" medical mission trip. During those ten days in the field, he saw approximately 4,000 locals badly in need of medical eye care. He always believed the gift of sight was to be cherished and nurtured for it so deeply impacted people's lives.
He was an immensely bright and soft-hearted fun-loving individual who did his best to help others throughout his life. Anyone who knew Marc knew he was a special soul. He had an immense passion for life. His family and friends will miss him more than words can say.
He is survived by his wife, Danielle, and his son, Mason, and his beloved dog, Charlie. He also leaves behind his sister, Rachel Gordon Smallwood and her husband, Brian MacInnis Smallwood, now residing in Harrisonburg, VA with Marc's niece and nephew, Amelia and Daniel. Also surviving are his parents, Harold and Linda Gordon of Stuart.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to honor his memory. The Lyons Club International is an obvious choice for what they do for people's vision, and National Institute of Mental Health speaks for itself as the leader in research focused on the understanding, treatment, and prevention of mental disorders and the promotion of mental health. A memorial service will be held at a date yet to be determined, time and place to be announced shortly.
