Mao's obituary
Mao-Chiu Chui (1942-2024)
It is with deep sadness that we announce the loss of Mao-Chiu Chui, 82, who passed away peacefully on February 2, 2024. She is survived by her five children: James (Louisa), Paul (Teresa), Deanna (Lokesh), Cindy (Wyeth), and Linda (Alun); and her ten grandchildren: Samuel, Jackson, Darren, Juliet, Emma, Janie, Benjamin, Emilie, Lola, and Jai. Her beloved husband, Cheung, had been her constant companion and her caretaker prior to his passing 11 months before her. They had been married for nearly 60 years.
Mao-Chiu was born in Meizhou, China to Liu Zhi Lu (father) and Poon Wai Foon (mother). She emigrated to the United States from Hong Kong in 1971 to Baltimore, Maryland. Despite initially knowing little English and raising small children, Mao-Chiu and Cheung worked as wait staff and cook before opening their own Chinese restaurant. They also ran several successful businesses including a clothing boutique, a retail gift shop, and a franchise pretzel store in addition to the Chinese restaurant and takeout businesses.
Mao-Chiu enjoyed studying and learning new subjects throughout her life. After her children moved away for college, Mao-Chiu became an avid organ player. She continued to play the organ after retiring and moving to California. She also enjoyed singing and dancing with friends in the senior center in California. Most of all, she loved being around her many grandchildren.
She will be remembered for her dedication to her family, her entrepreneurial spirit, her kindness, and her resilience despite her long illness.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 7, 2024 at the Highview Memorial Gardens, 3433 Fallston Rd, Fallston, Maryland at 10:30 am.
