Lyle's obituary

Lyle Edward Bailey

ST. AUGUSTINE -

My Dad, Lyle Edward Bailey of St. Augustine, Florida, passed away on April 12, two days before his 102nd birthday. On that day, he met his father, Augustus Ira "Gus" Bailey, for the first time. Gus had been killed in an accident when Lyle was only six months old.

He was born April 14, 1921, on Chestnut Ridge in Preston County, West Virginia, to Florence Agnes Bailey. He is survived by his daughter Patricia Stephens, son-in-law Christoper Stephens, half-sisters Frances Stephens and Mary Margaret Lyons, and her husband, Bob.

A few loved ones took the journey home before him, including his wife of 58 years, Lavenia Etta Bailey, and his mother, Florence, who passed away at age 98. He is also predeceased by his step-father Ross Mitter, his half-sister Katherine Pyles and her husband Ralph, his half-sister Vivian Travis and her husband Clyde, and his brother-in-law Paul Stephens.

Lyle worked as an electrical supervisor for Dupont Chemical Corporation for 35 years. He was retired from DuPont for 45 years, perhaps holding the record for oldest retiree of that company. He spent his second career as a furniture maker. Although he sold several of his creations to strangers, Dad gifted some to me and other family members.

He was a member of the St. Augustine Church of Christ. My Dad could fix anything and loved cooking and eating. At age 101, he made his way around computers better than many people half his age. He was a good man who worked hard and generously shared his time and talents with others. I was extremely fortunate to have been his daughter.

Roberts Funeral Home made arrangements. Lyle Bailey is interred at the Good Sheperd Memorial Gardens in Ocala, Florida. With respect, no flowers or gifts,  In remembrance of this exceptional man, please consider donating to an organization that helps children or animals.
