Lydia's obituary

Lydia Elizabeth Schroeder, 80 years old, of Napa, California, passed away on Monday, December 12, 2022 after a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s. Her remarkable spirit allowed her to face this disease with courage, humor, grace and great faith.

Lydia was born on November 21, 1942 to John and Doris Rische in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Lydia attended Grace Lutheran Elementary and West Portal Lutheran schools. She graduated from Concordia High School and Junior College in Oakland, California, then transferred to Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Nebraska for her last two years of college. Upon receiving her teacher’s credential, she accepted her first call to St. John’s Lutheran School in Napa, California where she taught her entire career. She retired in 2008 after 43 years of teaching.

Lydia was married to Roger Schroeder in 1965. They had two daughters, Amy and Lisabeth.

Not only was Lydia a great wife and mother, she was also known well in her community as an excellent teacher. She lived as an artist whose chosen canvases were her teaching career and her beautiful home in Napa, both of which inspired and blessed all who experienced those realms.

Lydia was predeceased by her husband Roger, her mother Doris, her father John, and her brother Phillip.

She is survived by her daughters, Amy Hammontree and Lisabeth Schroeder, her grandchildren, Austin Hammontree, Katelyn Hammontree, Kyle Hammontree, and Rosemary Jane Schroeder, and her siblings, John Rische, Paul Rische, Steve Rische, Ruth Rische, Rhoda Thompson, and Mary Rische Walker.

There will be a memorial service for Lydia and St. John’s Lutheran Church in Napa, California on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 1:00 pm.
