Lupe's obituary
Lupe is survived by her son Edward Zarate (Nancy), her daughter Rosemary Zarate-Crevello (Albert), four grandchildren, Michael Zarate (Cynthia), Matthew Zarate (Kristyna), Damian Crevello (Karly Pitman), Elena Crevello (John Kneedler), and three great-grandchildren, Malachi, Lily, and Astrid. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sabina and Justiniano Gutierrez, her brother Pete Gutierrez, loving husband Manuel Zarate, and two sons, Carlos and Mark Zarate.
Lupe (Guadalupe) was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, and immigrated to California at age 16. She worked most of her adult life as a hospital cook. After retiring, and raising her children, she became a Eucharistic Minister at St. Pius X Church, serving Communion, not only in masses there, but also providing Holy Communion for many years to ill and disabled Catholic residents at an Assisted Living Facility in Norwalk, CA.
Lupe had a life-long love of God and family. She maintained an open heart and home for anyone seeking respite and great food. She inherited her mother's love of cooking, and served numerous amazing meals that will be fondly remembered by so many friends and family. Many of her recipes will continue to be treasured as well. Lupe also loved to travel. Even when finances were tight she managed the family budget in a manner that ensured the family could visit Mexico to see relatives, and to give the family the opportunity to stay connected to our cultural heritage. She also made sure that the family could enjoy trips to local amusement parks and camping sights. These various trips served to strengthen family ties by often including extended family and friends. Lupe, along with our father, has left a lasting legacy of a loving family with so many wonderful traditions for which the family will be forever grateful.
Services were held on Saturday, August 18, at Chapel of Memories in Norwalk, CA. A mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 22, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Pius X Church, 10827 Pioneer Blvd., Santa Fe Springs, CA 90670. Interment of ashes will immediately follow at All Souls Cemetery, 4400 Cherry Ave., Long Beach, CA, 90807. A reception will be held at Lupe's home in Santa Fe Springs after that. Friends and family are welcome to participate. In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations may be made in her honor to St. Pius X Church, or to any charity of your choice.
