Luke's obituary

Luke Herbert Guilfoyle

Born June 2, 1939 in Abbotsford British Columbia, Canada, passed away at the age of 84 years in his home with family at his side on January 25, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents, and 9 siblings. He is survived by Rinda, his wife of 53 years, Tracy Poindexter (daughter), Libby and James Nickols (daughter and son-in-law), Mary and Jim Skeen (sister and brother-in-law), 6 grandchildren (Sean Luke Clark, Cody Poindexter, Devin Nickols, Jake Nickols, Nick Nickols, and Tasha McCullough), and 4 great-grandchildren.

Losing his father at an early age, Herb or “Herbie”, as he was affectionately called by family and friends, moved to Missouri. After serving his country, Herb lived in Washington state where he became a skilled auto body mechanic and eventually returned to Missouri and continued to work as a body man. Herb was a gifted musician. Playing music by ear, he never learned to read sheet music. Music became his passion and during this time he spent with life-long friends playing in dance halls and taverns. It was during this time he met a red-headed beauty named Rinda, and in 1970 he traded the dance hall for a stroll down the aisle with his bride Rinda and side-by-side they remained. Together they had two daughters Tracy and Libby and the family moved to Clarence, Missouri. That is where Herb could be found on the front porch playing music or cultivating his other passion for gardening.

Herb served where he was needed in the Shelbina Congregation for 23 years, known for his generosity, compassion and often offering assistance to others. On one such occasion, Herb helped two different sisters with their children to get to a district convention. Herb, together with his family, the sisters and their families, totaling 3 women and 11 children went to convention. A sight to be seen, a bystander, called out to Herb, “Man are all those kids yours”?

His appreciation for Jehovah’s creation led him to take his family on many adventures, camping, fishing, hunting, and exploring. Herb developed a green thumb in gardening and was generous with the fruits of his labor. He enjoyed giving as much as receiving. However, not all his efforts were successful. Many nights were spent cleaning the ceiling of tomatoes from a canning explosion and more than once cleaning the effects of a homebrew mishap. On such occasions, frequent phrases could be heard in the Guilfoyle house, such as, “could you do me a favor”, followed by “you reap what you sow”, ‘do not be irritating your children’ and the scripture found in 1 Peter 4:8, ‘love covers a multitude of sin’. With all Herb’s passions, he was most fond of serving Jehovah, and looked forward to walking in paradise.
