Luke's obituary

In Loving Memory of Luke Junbao Ding

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved son, Luke Junbao Ding, who left us due to Febrile infection-related epilepsy syndrome (FIRES), a rare and severe neurological condition, on February 20, 2025. Luke was 9 years old, a kind-hearted, intelligent, lively, and curious child who brought joy to everyone who knew him.

Born on April 11, 2015, in Atlanta, Georgia, Luke was a bright light in the lives of his family and friends. He was known for his sharp intellect, playful energy, and curiosity. His warm smile, infectious laughter, and sense of wonder will be deeply missed and forever cherished.

Luke is survived by his mother, Huaping Ding; his father, Jason Ding; and little sister, Miranda. His passing has left us heartbroken, but his memory will forever remain in our hearts.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 23, 2025, at 10:00 AM at 4067 Industrial Park Dr NW, Norcross, GA 30071.

Rest in peace, dear Luke. May you find peace and joy in heaven, forever surrounded by love and light.

Eulogy for Luke 02/23/2025 10:30AM

Dear family, friends, and teachers,

Thank you for being here today to join us in remembering our beloved Luke and honoring his short yet joyful life.

At this moment, our hearts are very heavy, but we know that Luke can feel all the love and thoughts we have for him from heaven. There, he will no longer suffer from illness or worries, only eternal happiness and peace.

Although Luke was only 9 years old, his life shined like a star. He was deeply loved by his parents, sister, grandparents, uncles, aunts, and all the friends, teachers, and classmates who cared for him.

Luke was a smart, kind, loving, and happy child, and his smile always brightened our hearts.

Luke loved reading and would often get lost in his books before bed. He enjoyed lying in bed reading book together with his sister Miranda. Peacefully. Until his mis-chie-vous sister becomes annoyed and breaks that peace. It happened a lot.

He also loved exploring the bookstore in Johns Creek with his cousins, where Dogman, Wimpy Kid, and InvestiGators were his favorites. Spending hours there reading books for free, we owned the bookstore a lot. He was for sure a fan of Harry Potter and had read the entire series many times in one year. Gryffindor is his favorite house, but I have no idea what that means. Is it 4 houses in total? Five, I will ask Miranda later?

Luke is also passionate about math. Every single birthday card with his best friend is filled with challenging math problems. That becomes a tradition now whenever other kid’s birthday.

He also loved music and the piano. Those complex notes are like alien languages to me, but not to him. So even he plays it wrong, I have no idea. He might have tricked me a few times when I think it now. Is that right, Mr. Eugene Lee? Luke learned many pieces from you. We really appreciate you.

Luke loves painting and drawing class. He had enjoyed that 1.5 hours of time every week at Ms. Mita’s home class, without parents around. But I think the most fun part is his laying and rolling on the grass of Ms. Mita’s backyard to clean the leaves and making them into piles. Can we get some refund back for all the yard work, Ms. Mita?

Luke went to weekend ACCA Chinese class, and we had many good times there as he was immersed with the traditional Chinese culture at different holidays. He enjoyed everything very much, except the homework part. You all know it, right? Finishing homework at the last minute is another tradition. Some traditions are universal.

Luke was an active kid who loved sports. He was a member of the Thunderbirds soccer team and never wanted to leave after practice. So many weekend practices or games, he was sweating so much, pouring water on his head, but still back to the field to play, but mostly chatting and laughing with his friends. Sorry, coach, he is not a good defender, but he did his best. Maybe let him do the goalkeeper next season, all right, coach?

He also loved swimming, and skiing. He taught his sister how to back swim and freestyle. He was such a natural on the snow slopes on his first day and even taught his sister and mom during the next trip; that saved me some money for ski class.

He loves to play badminton too, often beats his mom and sister together in our backyard a lot; so, guess who will cry first and who will get punished?

Luke had a creative side, too. He loved building Legos, playing Pokémon, and gaming with his friends. Whether they were biking, ziplining, climbing, or jumping into the pool, Luke and his friends always had endless adventures and even more to talk about. Many nights of Minecraft Dungeons are so memorable, like just happened yesterday.

Luke deeply loved his schools, both Vanderlyn Elementary and FSA, because of the caring teachers and classmates there. He always had endless stories to share with us.

Luke had a great sense of humor and loved sharing jokes he learned from his classmates. You know it, that ICUP joke always got you the first time. No? How about the “Are You Smart” joke?

Hi, Luke, I saw your Pokémon cards in your pocket, gave them back, before the teachers do!

As a typical boy, Luke’s favorite foods were Pizza and Chick-fil-A burgers, and surely NO vegetables. Chinese food? Sure, only fried rice or chicken wings.

BTW, a secret to you all: mushroom is his Achilles heel, he would rather lick your smelly foot than eating mushrooms.

And then there were the mysterious chocolate wrappers hidden around the house. Oh, wait—that was Miranda. Sorry, Luke.

All these little things made Luke who he was—our one and only, our dearest Luke. He wasn’t perfect, but he was perfect to us.

No words can fully capture Luke’s short yet happy life. He is an angel and brought nearly a decade of joy to our family and friends, and we are grateful for this angel who came into our lives and filled them with endless happiness.

We are also grateful to all of you—family, friends, and teachers—for loving him and accompanying him on this beautiful journey. We believe Luke is happy in heaven, watching over us with that same bright smile. And though we miss him terribly, we will carry his memory in our hearts until the day we meet him again.

Thank you, Luke, for being our son, our brother, our grandson, our nephew, our friend, and our student. We love you, and we always will.

悼念Luke
