Luis's obituary

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved Luis Mariano Morett on January 18, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Luis's courageous battle against esophageal cancer spanned nearly a year, and while his final moments mark the end of his earthly journey, they do not define the remarkable legacy of this brave and memorable man.

Luis, born on August 1, 1959, in Mexico City to Mariano Morett and Maria de Socorro Flores, brought joy, mischief, and boundless warmth to his five siblings: Marco, Victor, Carlos, Diana, and Martha. Survived by his fiancée and soulmate, Eleonore, his daughter, Andrea, and nieces and nephews: Mariana, Alfonso, Sandra, Diana Lauren, Edyca, Carlos, and Luis Andres, alongside his in-laws Alfonso, Hector, and Edith and his first wife, Romelia. Luis will be deeply missed by his clients, friends, including his best friend Sam, and all who were touched by his nurturing spirit.

To write about Luis’ life and legacy seems more deserving of a book than an obituary. The impact Luis has had on his family, friends, community, clients, and even strangers is unparalleled. Luis possessed a remarkable sense of initiative, coupled with immense industriousness, yet his most striking quality was his profound empathy. Luis was the man you turned to when you needed advice or a problem solved. Most likely he would lessen your concerns with a kind joke or comforting words. This made him an incredible businessman who ran what was continuously rated the most successful Hertz franchise in California for over 30 years. As an immigrant, he paid his way through college at USC, graduated with a finance degree, and has been a citizen of California since.

Luis was a man of many passions: he adored traveling, enjoyed long bicycle rides, relished leisurely walks, took pride in DIY home repairs, and above all, he cherished FOOD. To Luis, food was more than sustenance; it was his love language. Even clients visiting his Hertz office were greeted not just with professionalism, but with treats or meals, served alongside his contagious laughter.

His positivity radiated like sunlight, leaving a profound impact on the next generation. As a mentor, Luis provided invaluable guidance to those close to him: teaching them how to navigate the journey of life like seasoned cyclists—sometimes encountering falls, but Luis was always there to offer comfort and wisdom on how to get back on the road. Luis wasn't just a man; he was a beacon of warmth and resilience, illuminating the path for all who knew him.

We thank all of those who cared for Luis this past year including the Oncology team at Cedar Sinai.
