Lucy's obituary

Prayer warrior, wife, and mother — Lucy Torres-Calderon went to sleep in the Lord surrounded by her loving husband, daughter, son-in-law, and brother, on Tuesday, September 28, 2021.

She had a zest for life, a zeal for the Lord, and lit up the room wherever she went. She lived her days on fire for the Lord and spent her last days listening to songs of praise, the Psalms and other verses, and talking about the importance of the fervency of prayer that comes from the heart.  While she lived, she constantly found comfort in Bible promises, believed in laying all things at the feet of Jesus in prayer, and her favorite verse was Jeremiah 33:3: "Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know."

She was a woman of faith, who was a champion for education, loved to learn and ask questions, and tirelessly invested in the success of those around her. She believed in investing in whomever the Lord put in her path and helping to lift those around her up in whatever way she was able, and while she only bore one daughter, she adopted many into her family along the way.

Lucy was the eldest of 8 and was the Torres family matriarch. Born in San Turce, Puerto Rico, on December 13, 1941, to the late Felix Torres and Rufina Martinez, she called Massachusetts her home for over 4 decades.  She started her career as a court stenographer in Puerto Rico, attended medical school in Spain, and became a K-12 teacher, the profession from which she retired in Massachusetts.

As an advocate for education, she always said that little by little, you can get to where you want to go. She took 10 years while working full-time and supporting her parents and siblings, to finish her Bachelor's Degree in Puerto Rico, and she later obtained her Master's Degree in Bilingual Education in Boston while working full-time and being a wife and mother. She was passionate about healthy eating, loved to garden, and enjoyed traveling with her family. She also loved to sing hymns and write and recite poetry.

Lucy is survived by her beloved husband of 38 years, Carmelo Calderon, and her loving daughter Jessica Carlson and her husband Lance of Scottsdale, AZ; her sisters Miriam and Elizabeth Torres of Boston, MA, and Alba Lozano of Texas; her brothers Saulo Torres of Connecticut, Enrique Torres of Germany, Edwin Torres of Florida, and Miguel Torres of Puerto Rico; her step children Daniel Calderon of Phoenix, AZ, and Carmelo Calderon II of Kansas City, MO; her grandson Carlos Calderon of Lawrence, KS; and many sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and friends that were like family.

While she is no longer here, her family finds comfort in knowing that to live is Christ and to die is gain (Phil 1:21). They encourage friends and family to join them in reading and finding comfort in 2 Corinthians 5:1-9 AMP and 2 Thessalonians 4:13-18 AMP.

Viewing/Wake hours will be held on Monday, October 4th from 9 - 11AM at Silva Funeral Home in Taunton, MA.

Funeral service to begin at 11AM on Monday, October 4th from 11AM -12 Noon at Silva Funeral Home at 80 Broadway Street, Taunton, MA 02780. Internment/Burial will follow in Mayflower Hill Cemetery at 1PM. The family respectfully asks that mask be worn at all times while inside the funeral home.
