I had the good pleasure of meeting Lucy when she visited Lance and Jessie in Guam; 2018 I believe. She was such a kind and beautiful lady! As I get to know her a little better through these posts; an elegant orator, teacher, woman of faith; I see where Jessie gets some of her talent, magnetic personality, and love of God. It seams Lucy lived out Deuteronomy 6:6-7 as a teacher, friend, and mom: “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down and when you rise up.” My condolences to you my dear friend, and to your dad.

I was so sad to hear about Lucy. She had such a warm, funny personality and was so bold in her faith. I have so many wonderful memories when our church families would congregate at the Calderon home to fellowship. She will be missed by so many!

You were the first sabbath school teacher that I distinctly remember teaching me/us in the basement at the New Bedford church. I’m sure the kids you taught and motivated are numerous. Thanks for your inspiration

My beautiful aunt Lucy, she shared with me her love, advice, words of wisdom, knowledge of health and so much more. I will miss her so much. She shared with me this verse when I was going through a difficult time: “The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.” Job 1:21. Through this difficult time, may we continue to praise God for giving us the blessing of having known such an amazing and beautiful woman whose testimony will remain in our hearts forever, my beautiful Titi Lucy, I can’t wait to garden together when we meet again in eternity. Te amo Jessica y Tio Carmelo.

Lucy Calderon the most memorable Sabbath School teacher ever! I can still vividly remember the beautiful lessons, arts & crafts and activities Lucy presented every Sabbath. I always looked forward to her class, it was never a dull moment and the spiritual message was impactful to our little hearts and minds. I remember one Sabbath she arrived to church with a boat made out of cardboard. It was huge and colorful. I couldn’t imagine what she would do with it and I couldn’t t wait for class to start. Class began and Lucy took the boat, she sat behind it and began to row as she narrated the most riveting story of missionaries who traveled around the world.
Then there was vacation Bible school! No one could top her vacation Bible schools! I still remember the excitement I felt as I looked forward to her class. The arts and crafts were amazing and still to this day I like to create one of them with my students. There were a handful of people that inspired me to become a teacher and Lucy was definitely one of them. I remember thinking “I want to do that, I want to teach! How does she do it all?!” She was like the Adventist Mary Poppins! Minus the sugar and harmful treats though! Lol. She came on the scene and took us on adventures with her stories and songs.
Lucy and Carmelo always opened up their home. Jessica’s birthday parties were equivalent to walking into a wonderland! Games, food and activities awaited the kids while the parents enjoyed the freedom to relax and enjoy conversations in their beautifully decorated backyard.
I remember spending long summer Sundays in that backyard just playing and exploring nature. As I got older our conversations entailed education and health. She would share her recipes and tips for healthy cooking. I remember getting my first assignment as a teacher and telling Lucy! She had a gleam in her eyes and began to enlighten me on classroom management, reading programs, books and many other things. She was always willing to share resources, ideas and her personal teaching stories.
I look forward to the day when I am reunited with my favorite Sabbath School teacher and together attend Heaven’s class to learn at Jesus’ feet. What a day that will be!
To Jessica & Carmelo thank you for sharing Lucy, your home and love with us. The Lord used your family to be a blessing family to others. May God comfort you and hug you during these difficult times. May He keep you in perfect peace until that Great day!
🙏🏾❤️

I spent so much of my childhood in Lucy and Carmelo’s home. It was always happy times.
They always opened their home to me and they treated me as their own.
I remember worship in the living room, I remember Lucy telling me embarrassing stories about Jess lol, I remember Lucy teaching sabbath school class. I remember her always being so happy to see me.
I can still hear her voice, her beautiful accent, her laugh. I can see her big smile.
I am so grateful for all she did for my mom and I. I will miss her dearly.
Jess and Tio Carmelo,
My heart goes out to you. My deepest condolences. I pray for your peace and comfort in the coming days. 💕
May God carry you in His love as we await the great day of His return.

My condolences go out to the Calderon and Torres family! Lucy was a great person and will be missed a great deal. As a child Lucy tutored me. The one lesson she taught me was the value of giving it my all and how hard work and dedication leads to true rewards. Lucy was not the type to sugar coat things, she told you what you needed to hear and not what you wanted to hear. For this I will forever be grateful. I consider myself extremely blessed to have met and shared some great times with Calderon family. This is not goodbye, but until we meet again. I love you all. RIP Lucy Torres Calderon.
