Lucy Barnes, a beloved AKC-certified therapy dog, joined UMMC’s Animal Therapy program in August 2021. A 60-pound black Labrador, she and her handler, Kitty, visited the hospital every Tuesday and every other Thursday, bringing comfort to patients, families, and staff. Lucy’s presence was a staple at PACU, Radiology, SICU, BMT, Mother Baby, and various inpatient units, often dressed in festive outfits or playful scrubs.
Lucy began as a service dog but it didn’t work out with her veteran. The organization took her back so she began spreading love being therapy dog at a few different places. UMMC became Lucy’s favorite place—where she discovered her love for Puppacinos!
Sadly, Lucy was euthanized on May 25, 2025, due to sudden liver failure. Despite urgent care at Pet ER, her condition declined rapidly.
Team members are invited to celebrate Lucy’s legacy online if you can't make it in person. Lucy brought joy and connection to many—her spirit lives on, running free across the rainbow bridge.
