Lorraine's obituary
Lorraine Shaffer Bigman was a woman who made the most of her life. She loved her children and grandchildren. She was a creative person who enjoyed entertaining, singing, and dancing. She also was an accomplished artist.
How We Remember Her
Lorraine was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Meyer and Rebecca Schaffer. She had two brothers and two sisters, Jack, Joe, Mitzi, and Ruth. She had fond memories of her childhood.
At 18 she met her husband-to-be, Ben Bigman, and ran away with him to Crown Point and got married. They had two children, Harold (Hal) and Cary.
She was a devoted wife and mother. The early years were difficult ones, but they managed to get by. They moved to South Haven, Michigan, after World War II, where they bought a farm in a Jewish resort area and made new friends.
Lorraine enjoyed entertaining for the holidays and during the summer all her brothers and sisters with their families would come to visit.
When Hal and Cary enlisted in the service, Lorraine and Ben bought a trailer and traveled around the United States, eventually buying a house and settling in San Gabriel, California. After they were discharged, Hal and Cary followed them.
When the boys married and had children, she enjoyed watching her family and grandchildren grow. Cary married Elaine Seidner and they had two girls Robyne and Kim. Hal married Marilyn Horwitz and had son Jeff and daughters Jill and Dana.
After Ben passed away, Lorraine was never the same. She fought to be independent as long as possible, until she broke her hip and had to be put in a convalescent home. After an extended period of moving from one convalescent home to another, she had a series of mishaps and finally passed on to a better place, where she is once again with her husband, parents, siblings, and friends.
Lorraine is buried at Eden Memorial Park (11500 Sepulveda Blvd., Mission Hills, CA), Masada section, Row 1010, Space D.
