According to the first responders in Oak Island, they use a cardiac code whenever the person that they are treating is unconscious. Lori was unconscious when the emergency was called in and they assigned that code. Local news reported that Lori died from cardiac arrest based on this code. Other news organizations picked that up and repeated the incorrect information. While we do not have the final autopsy report back and her cause of death is listed as pending on her death certificate, the medical examiner told me that the preliminary cause of death is drowning.

We will not have the final report for several weeks. I'll share that information when we have it.

Lori was a fish - she loved the water and she was a strong swimmer. She was in shallow water when she died - she could stand with her head above water. I hope that the autopsy report sheds some light on what happened because nothing about this makes sense. Did she have have a health issue that rendered her unconscious when she was in the water? We may know or we may not ever know.

My thoughts are with you, the family and all of her friends. Dr. Lori was truly a blessing to Granville County and gave endlessly to so many causes. I started taking dogs to her when I was fostering for a rescue in NJ. She had not opened Mule Town but I knew that I would follow her there. We even exchanged numbers so we could keep in touch while her wonderful clinic was under construction. It was well worth an hours drive. She soon became my babies vet too. We shared stories and had lots of good laughs.  She teased me about being a foster failure a couple of times. It was very easy to think about her not just as a vet but a caring friend. ❤️
