Long's obituary
Long Dinh Pham passed away peacefully on July 3, 2024, in Oakland, CA, surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was 86 years old.
Long lived a productive and rich life full of adventure, adversity and generosity. His early life was marked by his many adventures as a young man exploring untouched parts of Vietnam and the building of a close-knit family with his wife. He survived many years of hardship during the war and 3 boat escape attempts after South Vietnam fell. With no money and 8 kids in tow, he and his wife arrived in the US in 1981 and worked tirelessly to raise their children to become successful and productive citizens, taking advantage of the opportunities that they themselves did not have. Throughout his life, Long was generous to causes for the poor and needy in Vietnam. He is beloved by his family and friends, and even people who didn't know him personally but benefitted from his generosity.
Long is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ngoc Thi Le and his 8 children (and their spouses): Loi (Tram), David (Chinh), Minh (Vi), Hai (Thuy), Chuong (Thu), An (Minh), Hanh (Tom) and Tam (Ryan). He adored his 15 grandchildren: Vi, Van, Vien, Loc, Havie, LeAnh, William, Lily, Mylan and Maili, Jonathan, Vincent, Eryn, Roan and Emme.
In lieu of flowers, Long kindly suggested that donations be made to a charitable cause dedicated to helping the poor and needy in Vietnam. The family has selected Children of Vietnam. He would have certainly approved.
