Lloyd always had the attitude of why not. He got me to bike 150 miles the day before the MS 150, then to invite my daughter to ride the MS 150 and get me back into skiing to do the Birkie. So thank you Lloyd for the inspiration.
So sorry Molly. Robyn, & Jake, but I am the guy who drove Lloyd to the movie theatre on opening night of "Monty Python & The Holy Grail". It's my fault you kids were subjected to that humor while so young.
Molly, Robyn, and Jake,

I'm so sorry for your loss. Lloyd was one in a million, someone who saw the positive in everything and didn't let the negatives slow him down. I experienced that in your dad the first time I met him, in 1996 at Rollerblade and that he didn't change post-diagnosis is mind blowing, so rare and so Lloyd. What amazing resilience and he was always that way. Think of a world with more Lloyd Kelenys; how much happier, smarter, kinder, more friendly, more enjoyable we'd all be.

Lloyd was a tremendous mentor to me all through our friendship, helping me navigate many things from job challenges (managerial and technical) to the Birkie hills. Post diagnosis his mentorship became even more valuable. I have early onset Parkinson's and my wife has young onset Alzheimer's. Lloyd's example, set with a far more dangerous and demanding disease, of how to live life was the center of our conversations the last 10 years (versus the previous 10 years when I kept trying to hire him and get him to move to Colorado!). We didn't talk often but the value of what Lloyd conveyed in each call was huge and I would often talk about his example with family and friends. So much so that I feel like I talk with Lloyd all the time, every week or two, when in reality we talked once or twice a year. I was shocked to look back through my phone and see we had not talked since last November. Lloyd's offered so much friendship in that call I guess it was still palpably with me. It's amazing to feel like Lloyd with is you, showing you how to lighten the load on days it seems heavy. He passed on so much of his amazing resilience that when I meet people struggling with the seemingly insurmountable I tell them 'The Story of Lloyd Keleny', which is not just post-diagnosis Lloyd but how he didn't allow himself to be trapped in a negativity swamp at RB and just kept doing great work, being curious, fun, inventive, and kind to everyone. It never fails to bring a smile and lighten the load. What a wonderful legacy Lloyd created.

I have been remembering a lot of adventures with Lloyd.  New memories have been coming back to me daily. So here are some of mine.

  • There was the first time we rode mountain bikes together. Lloyd showed up to the old Murphy trail (which was really fast and scary at times) with some old school bike without any suspension. But he rode hard anyway. A great start to what became many EPIC Wednesday night rides in the early 2000s.
  • Then there was the night that my wife got a call from the cops at 2am… Lloyd and I were doing one of our Friday night rides out at Bertram before Bertram was what it is today. We got lost and our lights ran out. Needless to say, the cops didn’t understand why our vehicles were parked out there and didn’t believe my wife that mountain biking at night was a thing.
  • Then there was 7 days in the Boundary Waters moose hunting! We didn’t see another person after the first day, and we got a moose! We had a few close calls going out and coming back with overloaded canoes on big water in Saganaga. Lloyd had a better stomach for risk taking than I did. I made him camp on an island until the wind subsided! Lloyd wrote a fantabulous (Lloyd word) short story describing our week. I wasn't able to find it yet, but will post it if I do.
  • Then there was a night skiing adventure at Woodland Trails Park in Elk River. Anyone who appreciates night riding on a mountain bike would also appreciate skiing in the dark with a crummy head lamp!
  • Then there was bear hunting in the Boundary Waters when it rained for three days straight. Lloyd and I got tired of sitting under his tarp and decided to get a fire going. Everything was soaked, but Lloyd’s determination was all that it took!
  • Too many mountain biking adventures to mention.

When I first met Lloyd I was about 30 and he was about 40.  I remember thinking how great it would be if I could still ride mountain bike when I am 40.  Then when I was 40 and watching Lloyd on the bike, I thought how great it would be to ride when I am 50.  Thank you Lloyd for all the adventure and inspiration over the years!  Here is to adventures that start before the sun rises and don't end until after the sun sets!

Lloyd was a friend since the age of 4, we had many many adventures together, primary school, Jr High, High school, and lived across the street from each other, many sundays were to motorcross races with his brothers, much time spent in the lake monona, went snake and frog hunting, camping together even at a very young age and used a canoe to get there ...... Time at the family cabin, even making movies a frame at a time..  makes me cry to lose another brother from a different mother.

Lloyd was a great guy. I enjoyed our conversations about life, travel, and what he wanted to do next.

Lloyd and I worked in same business unit at Donaldson. His work on some of the complicated vents are still produced to this day. My memory with Lloyd was when we travel to China on business trip, we were served chicken feet soup. Lloyd look at me and I knew I have to take it for the team  😊. He went on bike ride while in Hong Kong and I thought, Wow 😮, that’s crazy but he did it! I can eat chicken feet any day but biking around a foreign country. Only few can pull that off.  Such dedication, such brilliant mind. My condolences to the families.

Thoughts and prayers to Robyn and family from the Wand team.  We are so sorry for your loss.
My prayers and heart go out to the family.  I didn't have an opportunity to work directly with Lloyd but my first interaction with Lloyd was a beautiful fall day when I had just started biking into work.  Lloyd ends up arriving at work on his bike at the same time.  We introduce ourselves and said how awesome the bike ride was with the leaves and the fall sun and then got into the real details of how far we rode.  I started first with a strong 13 miles.  Lloyd gives me this smirk with a quiet chuckle and says I did 30.  From that moment a small friendship grew when we would pass each other in the hallway and exchanged bike stories or life in general.  I want to thank Lloyd for imprinting a piece of his life into mine.

Robyn - I didn't know your father, but I feel like I did because when you would share stories about him your face would light up and your love for him was so obvious.  My heart is with you at this time.  I'm so sorry.  Please know that Jeff and I send you our deepest condolences.  Much love to you and your family.

Jake, Molly and Robyn,

  • My condolences to you all.  I will remember him as one of the most positive and ambitious people I’ve known.  Either on a bike or engineering a new idea, he didn’t let much  get in his way.  I’m sorry I didn’t  get to connect with him a couple months back.  Rest In Peace Lloyd.

Lloyd was a great friend and co-worker. He was always there to help with any projects and was a talented engineer. He will be missed.

Keleny family,

Very sad to hear of Lloyd's passing. Years ago when he would come out to CA for work, he would always bring me up to speed on how all the kids were doing and he was very proud of you all and your accomplishments. He loved you all very much! Some of my favorite childhood memories are of him taking us all out on the river.

Jake,

If you need anything brother, feel free to reach out to me.
