Lloyd's obituary

It is with sorrow, reflection and gratitude that we announce the passing of Lloyd Thomas Farrey, an artist and sailor with a gentle heart and independent spirit, who was born on May 6, 1939, and passed away on June 2, 2025. Lloyd, or "Tom" as he was known to many, was a true child of Old South Florida, shaped by the ethos, rhythms, and colors of the warm waters of Biscayne Bay, marinas where his live-aboard boats were moored, and Atlantic Ocean that he called home for decades.

Born into one of the early families of Miami Beach, Florida, Lloyd was an alumnus of Archbishop Curley High School where he graduated in 1957. He then served our country honorably in the Coast Guard from August 29, 1957, until his discharge on July 28, 1960. Lloyd continued his education at the University of Florida and later graduated with a B.A. in Business from Florida Atlantic University in 1965. His professional journey included noteworthy accomplishments such as becoming the national sales training manager for Savin USA and being named Realtor-of-the-Year in Hollywood, Florida.

He was married to Marcia Newton in 1963 and welcomed two children, Tom and Lesley, in the ensuing years. He later married Alicia Alfert in 1976. His grandchildren include Cole, Anna and Kelley Farrey, and Emma, Sarah and Thomas Pacey.

Lloyd was happiest on his 34-foot sailboat, whether on his way to the Bahamas on just docked at one of the marinas he called home. He appreciated sunsets, the pastels that dominate Florida water life, and drew on that to paint vibrant straw hats and canvasses that he sold to strangers or gave away to friends, sometimes with a personal feature added to honor their journey.

He suffered setbacks, starting with a serious ankle injury when he was 14 that left his right leg one inch shorter than his left. He sought joy as a response, found peace in meditation and symphonies, and guidance in books like The Four Agreements, by Don Miguel Ruiz , sharing insights and life lessons with family and friends. He loved nothing more than a good conversation.

He loved being active, bicycling in the Keys before the sun rose, and swimming laps at the local public pool. At sunset, he could be found below the tiki hut at the Blue Waters Marina in Tavernier, enjoying drinks and steaks on the grill with other sailors moored there. He recalled fondly his memories and learnings from trips to Spain and Hawai'i. His life lessons were simple yet profound: Be yourself and enjoy life; engage in self-discovery and carve your own path, free of society's expectations.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his father, Ignatius Lloyd Farrey, and mother, Gertrude Ziesler. His legacy will continue in the laughs he shared with friends and family, the ideas he passed on, and the rich art he created. His life serves as a reminder to us all to approach every day with authenticity and joy, living true to oneself, and finding beauty in the world around us.
