Linda's obituary
Linda Dougherty, formerly of Apple Valley, passed away peacefully on August 02, 2022 in Summerville, South Carolina. Born on January 20, 1946 in Texas, Linda spent 76 wonderful years spreading joy to any and all around her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lonnie Walker and Elizabeth Walker, her husband Robert “Bob” Dougherty, her sons, Robert William Dougherty Jr and Jon Patrick Dougherty and her sister Nina Hermstad. She is survived by her daughters Patricia Monkiewicz and Barbara Dawley, 7 grandchildren Alena, Kanon, Candis, Jessica, Scott, Justin and Kyle, 20 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.
She was born in Texas and moved to California in the early 1950’s but stayed a Southern girl at heart. She was a proud Texan and reminded us of southern traditions and etiquette every chance she got. In California she met the love of her life and married Robert Dougherty in 1962. They welcomed their son Robert Jr in California before the Marines moved them 2700 miles away to Virginia where they welcomed their daughters Patricia and Barbara. They moved back to California and welcomed their youngest son Jon. She was a proud Marine wife and supported her husband through deployments while maintaining their home for their children. She loved being a mother, grandmother, great grandmother and eventually great great grandmother more than anything in this world. Her face would light up when she was surrounded with family.
Everyone who knew her knew her obsession with “Gone with the Wind”. She had an entire room in her house dedicated to the memorabilia of the movie and we all watched it with her multiple times. Unlike many people her age, Linda loved the internet. She made friends with people all over the world and maintained these great friendships for many years. She lost both of her sons too soon and used that grief to help support other grieving parents and spread awareness for causes close to her heart. As her children and grandchildren grew up Linda’s cats became her children. She loved her cats so much and they brought her so much joy.
Eventually they retired and moved to Apple Valley, California where her and Bob enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren and great grandchildren. They would plan frequent trips to see them as well as stops in Las Vegas and Disneyland. When Bob got sick Linda spent 2 years caring for him as he was frequently in and out of the hospital. He passed in 2018 and her heart was broken. She moved to South Carolina with her youngest daughter and they enjoyed traveling and spending time with family until her health deteriorated as well. We feel peace that she is finally with her loved ones she has grieved for so many years.
She will be laid to rest in Riverside, California with her beloved “Bob”. Arrangements are still being made and will be posted as soon as possible.
A loving and wonderful woman until the very end, she will be greatly missed.
