Obituary for Lillie Mae Oglesby
February 6, 1957 – June 13, 2025
It is with heavy hearts and loving memories that we announce the passing of Lillie Mae Oglesby, age 68, on June 13, 2025 at Yale New Haven Hospital surrounded by her family.
Lillie was born on February 6, 1957, in Bulloch County, Georgia, and raised in Statesboro. At 19, she set out for Bridgeport, Connecticut, where she built a life filled with strength, laughter, and unwavering love for her family. A dedicated and hardworking woman, she spent over 30 years as a machine operator at Schick Manufacturing, where she eventually retired.
A proud and loving mother to five children—Stacy Andrews, Victoria Oglesby, Lisa Whitfield, Torie Whitfield, and her beloved son, the late James Earl Whitfield—Lillie was the heartbeat of her family. Her home was a place where stories were shared, jokes were cracked, games were played, and meals were made with love.
Lillie’s faith grew deeper in her later years. In 2024, she was baptized through Genesis Kingdom Center Ministries, affirming her relationship with Christ—a decision that brought her immense peace and purpose.
She had a joyful, bold spirit and a personality that was impossible to forget. She loved playing spades, fishing, cooking, and—above all—playing games on her iPad. She never missed a chance to shop, laugh, or lovingly tease those around her. Her presence brought life to every room she entered.
Lillie is survived by her daughters, grandchildren, and a large, close-knit family who adored her:
Grandchildren: Leah Clarke, Shatoya Davis (Dywan Davis), Taja Whitfield, Dashawn Bostic, Shnyah Whitfield, Annazae Heyward, Izaiah Hatchett, Aden Hatchett, Amiyah Hatchett, Rebecca Taylor, Jamara Whitfield, and James Whitfield.
Siblings: Penny L. Oglesby, Karen Grant Smith, Susie Mae Oglesby-Brown, Luvirn Oglesby, Gary Lee Grant (the late Charlene Law-Grant), John Douglas Oglesby, Kenny J. Oglesby, and Kerry J. Oglesby all of Statesboro, GA.
She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Gertrude and Perry Oglesby, her brother, Terry Oglesby and her dear son, James Earl Whitfield.
Lillie’s legacy will live on in the stories told, the laughter shared, and the love she spread so freely. Her favorite sayings reflect her fierce spirit and humor:
“This player player had to go until we see each other again.”
“I gave my life to Christ—I’m not going back.”
“You have to decide, you have to decide”
“Danggggg”
