I never met Liesel.

I met Gerald, Barbara and Silke at the Virginia Scottish Games.

I met them 129 days after Liesel had passed. Their grief was fresh. Their passion for life was intact. Their love for Liesel was evident. Their support of each other, and affection for each other, was breathtaking.

I am not a stranger to loss. It doesn't frighten or startle me. I have travelled more than many and met more people than most. This is thanks to a rewarding career for which I am dearly grateful. Meeting this family and immediately having a perspective into their profound sorrow moved me to tears repeatedly. It wasn't the death of Liesel alone, it was that she was so authentically, purely and heartbreakingly missed in a way which I have not seen before. It was as if the fourth wheel of a car had vanished mid-journey and the remaining three were determined to carry on relentlessly and that somehow, seemingly miraculously, they did. It is a gift of great fortune that any of us living now should ever be so loved. So she was. So she is. And so will I ever regret one impossibly sad fact.

I never met Liesel.

Loved that she wanted to travel with me and HMac to OSG. Loved that she was excited to be our DD when we had dinner at Doug & Lisaโ€™s. She was always a pleasure to be around. Looked back at some of the pictures of her in the Scottish Walk and impressed with watching her grow up. ๐Ÿ’™
I have so many ... but literally being greeted every single morning in room 228 (my classroom) by her with a "MOOOOOOOOOOM" before she would either go into a story about something crazy that had happened, or immediately running back out so she wouldn't be late to her first block class.

The times she would cry from being so exhausted at rehearsal, but would always push through despite being so tired.

How she made great margaritas for me and Ty when we came over to the Witzman house in 2013 while Jerry worked on Big Blue's stained-glass window and laughed when we mentioned it to her.

Her response of "Bet" to literally anything all the time, and it still makes me laugh.

How so many independent guard instructors approached me and Tykeem asking about her, where she wanted to march after North, and how technically beautiful she was on the floor.

There are too many ... but all of them bring a smile to my face. I miss her so much. I can't believe it's already been a year. Miss you, Liesel.

โ€œThatโ€™s right, I stepped up! Sheโ€™s my friend and she needed help. If I had to, Iโ€™d pee on any one of you!โ€ - Joey Tribbiani (Friends)

This would be Liesel.... sheโ€™d pee on you if she had too ๐Ÿ’–. Always doing things for others and making them laugh at the same time because sheโ€™s โ€œgot chโ€™u....โ€ That is the beauty of her.

My favorite memory is how she made Maelee feel. Maelee loved any moment or douse of attention she had from her. She got to experience Barbie doll houses, blanket living room forts, pumpkin/apple picking, swim dates and the love of superheroes from Liesel.

Sheโ€™s is always popping up in my head and heart often. I see her in my best friends smile, in the strength of her father and the creativity of her older sister. I still know sheโ€™s there and when you need her, sheโ€™s still โ€œgot chโ€™u.โ€ ๐Ÿ’–

This shows the true comical aโ€ฆ
This shows the true comical and happy liesel that we all know and miss. She was by far a great friend and an even better prom date.
Liesel and I unfortunately donโ€™t have any photos together, but I believe that was because when we would hang out we were never on our phones. We were always telling eachother stupid stories and also deep stories about our lives. I did not know Liesel for a long period of time, but in the few month that we were friends, I considered her my best friend. And I still do. She would always be awake at 3am when I just needed someone to talk to. I miss her dearly. Happy Birthday sweet girl. You are so missed.
