Leslie Lee Runde, 88, of Mexico, passed away on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, at Heritage Hall in Centralia, surrounded by his loved ones. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 am on Thursday, July 11, at Victory Christian Fellowship, 3550 S. Clark in Mexico.
Leslie was born on May 5, 1936, in Laddonia, the son of Clemens Gerhardt Runde and Mary Montague “Mollie” (Brown) Runde. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Jean Stanford, Shirley Cornett, and Lois Ann Paden. On January 7, 1962, in Mexico, he married Carolyn Yvonne Walker, and in their 62 years of marriage they built a life filled with love and family. After graduating from Mexico High School, he served in the U.S. Army for two years, and then worked for 43 years at National Refractories.
A devout Christian, gifted musician, and cherished family man, Leslie was born with a heart full of kindness and a spirit dedicated to his faith. He was an active member of Victory Christian Fellowship and served others by driving the church bus. Leslie's life was a testament to the virtues he held dear.
Leslie was a lover of bluegrass music and attended many festivals with his wife, Carol. He was a gifted musician, known for his beautiful singing voice and impressive guitar skills. His music was a source of joy and inspiration, reflecting the depth of his soul and the warmth of his character.
As a family man, Leslie was a devoted father and grandfather who always prioritized his family's happiness and well-being. He encouraged his loved ones to lead happy and fulfilling lives, instilling in them the values of dignity and respect. His generosity and willingness to help others were boundless, and he was known for his exceptional kindness to everyone he met.
Leslie is survived by his loving wife, Carol Runde; two sons, Benny Runde of Mexico and Eddie Runde and his wife, Jan, of Ashland; and two daughters, Debra Runde of Wisconsin and Molly Runde and her husband, Jeff Foster, of Prairie Village, Kansas. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren: Krista Runde of Columbia, Mary Cassandra Angell of Mexico, Yvonna Marie Runde of Baxter Springs, Kansas, Adam Runde of Michigan, Brooke (Jared) Thomassen of Ashland, Chad Montegna of Bondurant, Iowa, April Foster of Prairie Village, Kansas, and Charlie Foster of Prairie Village, Kansas. Additionally, Leslie is survived by nine great-grandchildren: Riley, Abel, Xavier, Michael, Hunter, Jlin, Joseph, Lily, and Lavender. His family will forever cherish the memories and the love he imparted to each of them.
Leslie made sure to create lasting, happy memories with his family, often taking them on fun vacations that brought joy and togetherness. He will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing him. In remembering Leslie, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of love, music, and unwavering kindness. His memory will forever be cherished, and his influence will continue to guide and inspire us.
