Leslie George Bateman, known fondly as “Bates”, a renowned musician and world-class studio engineer, passed away on January 22, 2024. He was born on October 8, 1949, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan leaving behind a legacy that resonates with the music industry and the hearts of those who knew him.
Les is survived by his loving family, including four children: Cassandra, Vanessa, Symphony and Catlan, nine grandchildren: Vanessa, Joshua, Benjamin, Kody, Nathaniel, Harrison, Bobby, Evan and Emma and one great-grandchild: Elio. Les is also survived by his siblings: Marilyn, Darlene, Fred, James and Ann. Les is predeceased by his siblings: Donald, Gary, June & Jack. His family was a source of great joy and pride for him, and his impact on their lives will be remembered with gratitude and love.
Les developed a passion for music at a young age and learned how to play the piano and organ. He joined Witness Inc., a popular Canadian rock band in the 1960’s as an organist. A true virtuoso in the world of music, Leslie's talent as a musician and studio engineer was unparalleled. Transitioning from artist to building some of the largest studios in North America and known as one of the pioneers bridging the transition from analog to digital in the music industry. His dedication and passion for his craft were reflected in an extraordinary career that spanned decades. Leslie's collaboration with Noah “40” Shebib and Aubrey "Drake" Graham earned him remarkable recognition and immense pride in the later years of his life.
Beyond the accolades and achievements, Leslie was known for his tenacity, drive, generosity, and unwavering commitment to his art. His contributions to the music industry will be remembered not only through his extensive awards but also through the countless melodies and harmonies he crafted that continue to resonate with listeners around the world. He was a true mentor and inspiration to many.
A celebration of life will be held on February 17th, 2024, at Rodney’s Oyster House from 8:00 pm located at 469 King Street West.
