Leonardo's obituary
In Loving Memory of Leonardo De La Vega
November 3, 1984 – May 18, 2025
"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." – Psalm 34:18
It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, Leonardo De La Vega, who departed this life on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at the age of 40 in Illinois.
Born on November 3, 1984, in Chicago, Illinois, Leonardo was a bright light in the lives of those who knew him. Though his life was marked by hardship and injustice, having been incarcerated from the young age of 16, Leonardo never allowed his spirit to be broken. He bore his suffering with a strength and grace that inspired those around him. His smile could light up a room, and his happy-go-lucky nature brought comfort and joy even in the darkest of places.
Leonardo was a man of deep intelligence and articulate thought. He was kind-hearted, loving, and fiercely loyal to his family. He had a unique way of expressing himself that made others feel seen and heard. Despite the many trials he faced, he never stopped believing in the goodness of people and the hope of redemption.
He is survived by his devoted parents, Leticia and Raul Sr., and his loving brothers: Raul Jr., Oscar, Eduardo, David, Michael, Guillermo, and Angel. He also leaves behind his cherished nieces and nephews: Dominic, Anthony, Xavier, Natalie, Aliza, Julian, Izreon, Damien, Isabella, Milan, Amber-Jem, Dylan, and Milo, who will carry his memory in their hearts forever.
Leonardo’s life reminds us of the importance of compassion, justice, and second chances. Though he was denied the opportunity to live freely, his soul is now at peace in the presence of our Lord. We take comfort in knowing that he is finally free, embraced by God’s eternal love and mercy.
A memorial website has been created in his honor, where friends and family can share memories, photos, and messages of love. Let the memory of Leonardo be with us forever.
"Well done, good and faithful servant... Enter into the joy of your Lord." – Matthew 25:23
