The Obituary
Leona’s story began on September 04, 1942 in Easton, Maryland. She was the first born of the late Anna B and Leon Price.
Leona’s formal education began at Newtown School in Newtown, MD. At the age of fifteen, the family relocated to Wilmington, DE where she grew up in the close-knit, family community of Belvedere attending Henry C. Conrad High School.
After she graduated High School; she left Delaware to attend & graduate from Cortez Peters Business College, the first Black Business College in Washington, DC. Upon graduating college Leona was employed for many years with the Federal Government's Housing and Urban Development Department (HUD). While living in DC, she met and married the late Jerry (Jerome) Rutledge and from that union two children were born, Marc Avery and Erika Tyliese.
Leona enjoyed entertaining/hosting her family and friends when they visited DC. Leona was very cultured in that she developed an appreciation for the arts: literary and performing arts and especially music. She also loved reading poetry and dancing. Leona was a woman of distinct tastes when it came to fashion and style. She also had a deep love and appreciation for black history and of course education. Leona was brave and always wanted the very best in life for herself and her children (Marc and Erika). She never missed an opportunity to go after her dreams which included living in Los Angeles, CA and her favorite, New York City. Leona was a smart woman who was always up on current events and the latest news and made sure her children were as well.
Leona became a follower of Jesus Christ at an early age. She was raised by her parents in The United Methodist Church along with her six siblings. During her years in DC Leona embraced the Catholic/ Episcopalian faith practices. When she returned to Delaware she attended Services at Church of the Living Word where her Brother-In-Law Bishop Eddie Johnson is Pastor
Leona was preceded in death by her two younger siblings Mary Victoria (Vykee) and Robert L. (Eve). She leaves to cherish her memory children Marc Avery and Erika Tyliese, siblings: Leon (Joe) Price (Constance), A. Patricia (Tricy) Johnson (Bishop Eddie), Catherine and Vanessa Price, goddaughter Kia Bing-Davies, cousin Jacqueline Stanton who was more like a sister to her a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends that she loved like family. Leona will be missed so very much.
