Leon was born on Oct. 29, 1953, to the late Thomas Jefferson "T.J." Mckay and Anna Louise Gordon Mckay in Cobbtown. He received his education at Ralph J. Bunche High School and graduated from Camden County High School, Class of 1971. Leon worked for Gilman Kraft Bag Plant and Tyco SimplexGrinnell where he retired from.
Those left to cherish his memories and to uphold his legacy include his loving and devoted wife, Katina Foster Mckay ; his son, Leon Damon Mckay Jr. (Danielle); three daughters, Lindsay Danielle Mckay, Aija'Valon Leonshae Mckay and Vyctoria Louise Gaines (Marc); two stepsons, Brandon B. Lanes and David K. Letbetter III; 11 grandchildren, five brothers and sisters, Thomas Mckay Jr. (Janice), Marvene Coleman (Harold), Carrie Sykes, Irene Campbell and Nathaniel Mckay (Juanetta); a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends, and a very special friend since the first grade, Deacon Terrance "Terry" Floyd Sr.; and special cousins; the Kennedy Family of Metter.
Leon was a man's man, a skilled musician, a humble, yet confident man, a man who could build or fix anything. He was a kind and generous man, who was always willing to help anyone in need. And, Oh, did Leon love his saxophone. His saxophone was his love, his first love, and boy could he play. No one will ever play like Leon Mckay. When he played, he became one with his horn and poured into it his spirit, he laughed, he cried, he told stories, he gave praises through his horn. Leon's song was one of a kind and shall be remembered by all who ever heard him. We Love You Leon!
