Leon's obituary
Leon Wallace Linton, age 90, passed peacefully at his place of residence in Oakwood, GA, on March 23rd 2023, with his family by his side.
Born in Tryon, Oklahoma on August 30, 1932, Leon was the only child of Arthur and Gertrude Linton. He graduated from Stillwater High School in 1951 and married his high school sweetheart, Naomi Lou Self, on August 9th, 1953. Together they raised two children: Star and Lance.
He went on to study Business Management at Oklahoma State University and graduated with a Masters in Vocational Technical Education.
Leon spent his life juggling his two passions: woodworking and education. It is very fitting that his first job after high school was working in a lumber yard. He took his first education position at Capitol Hill High School in Oklahoma City, OK. This was only the beginning of dedicating more than 30 years to Vocational Education. Leon’s educational talents were known of across the country, teaching adult education in Ohio, Kansas and Oklahoma. Throughout life, Leon had the honor of teaching life skills and molding adults and young people into their best selves.
After 13 years of service as an assistant Superintendent, he retired from Moore-Norman Vo-Tech school in 1990. This was not his final endeavor as Leon took pride in planning and executing various projects. Shortly after retirement Leon and Naomi opened Yogurt +, a soft serve Yogurt Shop. They built their dream retirement home alongside their best friends, Richard and Laverne Howard, where they housed many large family get togethers for their robust family.
After retiring, Leon was able to dedicate more time to his deep passion for wood working. At one point in life, Leon owned a furniture restoration business called “Holiday Finishing”. Retirement allowed him to continue pursuing that passion, perfecting his skills in cabinetry, furniture, and various wood craft projects. Leon and Naomi, along with their family, paved the way for house flippers today, remodeling numerous homes throughout their lives together.
Family members will never forget helping at craft shows or family photoshoots, as Leon had a passion for portraiture photography, and often had a camera in hand. A loving grandfather who wouldn’t let his grandkids leave without sharing a Coke float, or filling gas tanks up with gas before they left town. He wasn’t afraid to teach hard life lessons like: doing things right the first time, the importance of punctuality, how to operate a lawn mower, and not to come out to his shop without shoes on! And who can forget the daring and coveted rite of passage: the great shoulder stand. Is there anyone who doesn’t have a picture of standing on his strong shoulders?
Leon will be remembered for his gentle nature and bear hugs, as a respectful and patient man who had a playful sense of humor, an excellent teacher, a man of his word, a role model and innovator, an expert craftsman, his desire to eat “something sweet”. Most of all, he will be remembered as a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather.
Leon is survived by his Wife, Naomi Linton. Daughter Star Stovall (Sam). Daughter-In-law, Teri Linton. Five Grandchildren: Kelly Tullis (Shawn), Sheri Linton, Cory Page (Michelle), Shanna Linton, and Theresa Linton. Fourteen Great Grandchildren: Octavia Linton, Kabrina Brown, Olivia Horn (Everett), Jewdain Williams, Jaida Fowler, Elisha Linton, Seth Pearson, Emma Sanders, Caleb Sanders, Sasshera Butler, Karey Lambeth, Keanan Lambeth, Hannah Tullis, Madi Tullis, and Nikoli Page. Nine great-great grandchildren: Stevie Rose Marks, Heaven Sullivan, Cameron Hart, Time Horn, Nevaeh Williams, Eternity Williams, Ren Linton, Entropy Horn, and Elliott Sanders.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Gertrude Linton and son, Lance Linton.
To honor Leon’s wishes, there will be no funeral services. A private ceremony will be held when his cremains are returned to his home state of Oklahoma.
