Len's obituary

Len E. Schweitzer (nee Leonard Swisher) died peacefully at his home on May 22, 2021. Len was born on January 22, 1947 in Thompsonville, MI to William and Florence Swisher, the youngest of eleven siblings and half-siblings.

After his mother’s passing in 1960, Len’s sister Penny and her family welcomed him into their Redford Township, MI home with open arms. Here he met his best friend Kenny Schroeder; their "studying" and roughhousing created a lifelong friendship.

Len graduated from Redford Union High School in 1965. He attended the University of Michigan where he earned a Bachelors in Business Administration in 1970.

After marrying his high school classmate Judy Littleton in 1971, Len fulfilled a lifelong dream and moved to Flagstaff, AZ. His Arizona adventures included working as a forest firefighter; living on a ranch where he took care of goats and other animals including his beloved Patience the cow, Sally the horse, and Samson the boxer; and building his own house for his young family (Kimberly (b. 1977) and Pamela (b. 1980)).

The Swishers moved to Lexington, KY in 1982. Shortly after divorcing in 1987, Len started as an accountant at Citizens Security Life Insurance Company. Len moved to Louisville, KY with his girls in 1990 when the company relocated. He retired as the company’s Chief Financial Officer in 2014.

Len was the Center Administrator through the 1990’s for the Mankind Project (then known as New Warrior Louisville), a network of peer facilitated men’s groups supporting men in leading lives of integrity, authenticity, and service. He mentored hundreds of men and was considered the glue that held the nascent community together. Many of these men visited him in his final days, sharing their gratitude for how much he impacted them and their families by extension. In fact, everyone who knew Len could feel his deep care for them.

Len’s happiest times were spent with his daughters, granddaughters, and dogs in his backyard. He maintained his big smile and unexpected dry and silly sense of humor throughout.

He is survived by daughters Kim Tabler (Swisher) and Pam Swisher and granddaughters Erin and Jillian Tabler.

Special thanks to Tiffany, Tonasia, AJ, Chelsea, Mr. John, Dr. Currie, and Hosparus. Their loving, dedicated care created the village that allowed Len to stay in his home.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Kentucky Humane Society.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, June 3 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Citizen’s Life Insurance Company, 12910 Shelbyville Road.
