Lela's obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Lela, who left us peacefully on August 22, 2024, at home in Pisgah, AL, surrounded by loving family members. Lela was a radiant spirit whose warmth and kindness touched the lives of everyone she met.

Born in Trenton, GA, to Joseph R. Knight and Jolee (Carrell) Smith, she enjoyed life and had a bit of an adventurous streak, living and working in Illinois, Georgia, Nevada, California, and New Mexico. In her golden years, she returned home to Sand Mountain, AL, where her forebears have lived for more than 100 years.

Lela is survived by her life partner, Gary McGlaun; her sister, Peggy Joan & Joseph Hernandez; her sons, Brian & Gilda Kneitz, and David & Cheryl Kneitz; her daughters, Tina Kneitz and Willie Sims, and Kazandra & Randy Kallis; (8) grandchildren; (14) great-grandchildren; and (1) great-great-grandchild.

The family requests that flowers and gifts be sent to the Pisgah Senior Citizens Center, 25 Metcalf St., Pisgah, AL 35765 / (256) 451-3033. The center is open from 8 AM to noon.

The family will also host a Celebration of Life sometime in the near future.

Though our hearts ache in her absence, we find solace in the love Lela gave. Mama will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
