It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lawrence “Craig” Skaggs, a devoted husband, father, advocate, author, and veteran, who passed away on March 7, 2019, at the age of 72.
Born on February 10, 1947, in Charleston, West Virginia, Craig lived a life of honor, dedication, and compassion. He served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where he earned a Purple Heart for his bravery and sacrifice.
Craig was a lifelong learner and an accomplished academic, earning a master’s degree in Communications from West Virginia University. His contributions were recognized when he received the prestigious Governor’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in West Virginia, a testament to his dedication to his home state.
Following his military service and academic pursuits, Craig built a distinguished career as an executive at DuPont, where he fought tirelessly for the rights of DuPont pensioners, ensuring fairness and dignity for retirees. He was a passionate advocate for environmental protection and democratic causes, leaving a legacy of service and justice.
Craig was also a talented writer and the author of *Deceiving Destiny,* a novel that showcased his creativity and intellect. A lover of travel, he spent many years as a “snowbird,” enjoying winters in warmer climates before settling in Gulf Shores, Alabama, with his beloved wife, Pam.
He was a loving and devoted father to his two sons, Eric and Jay Skaggs, who will forever cherish his wisdom, kindness, and unwavering support. Craig was preceded in death by his parents, Grayson and Virginia Skaggs, who instilled in him the values that shaped his remarkable life.
Craig’s passions were many, but his dedication to pensioners’ rights, environmental advocacy, and democratic ideals stood at the heart of his life’s work. His advocacy inspired all who knew him and left a lasting impact.
A private celebration of Craig’s extraordinary life has been held. In his honor, the family encourages donations to organizations supporting pensioners’ rights, environmental protection, or veterans’ causes.
Lawrence “Craig” Skaggs was a man of vision, integrity, and courage. His tireless dedication to justice, creativity, and the causes he held dear enriched the lives of all who knew him.
