It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lawrence Delfino Porter, a remarkable man, loving husband, devoted father, and respected scientist.
Born on October 5th, 1932, Lawrence left us on January 6th, 2022, leaving behind a remarkable legacy.
Lawrence is survived by his beloved wife, Dora-Thea Porter, and their two sons, Eugene and Andrew Porter. He was predeceased by his brother, David Porter. Lawrence's family the cause he cared most passionately about, and he considered his sons to be his greatest accomplishment in life.
Lawrence had an extraordinary academic journey that saw him graduate from Stanford, CA in 1955 with a degree in Physics. He furthered his education at the University of California, Los Angeles, obtaining his M.S. in Physics in 1957 and his Ph.D in Physics/Geophysics in 1962.
A prolific Seismologist and Geophysicist, Lawrence contributed to groundbreaking technology related to earthquakes, a testament to the boundless curiosity and sharp intellect he possessed.
Well-known for his outgoing and friendly nature, Lawrence had a passion for life that was contagious. He loved engaging anyone in interesting conversations and was often described as the life-force of his family. His recreational activities included writing computer codes and searching his ancestry. An avid chess player, Lawrence often used the game to connect with others and stimulate his mind.
Lawrence embraced the beauty of the world, with Yosemite being his favorite vacation spot. He also had a deep fondness for traveling and meeting new people, a testament to his charismatic personality. His best advice to those around him was to 'Enjoy life to the fullest.'
Lawrence's legacy is one of generosity, kindness, and unwavering devotion to his family. He was a supportive husband and a nurturing father. He will be dearly missed but his spirit will continue to live through the lives he touched. His life serves as a reminder to us all to live fully, love deeply, and pursue passions relentlessly.
