Larry's obituary

Lawrence “Larry” Michael Giewont, 74, of Homosassa, Florida, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2025, surrounded by his wife, children, and faithful dog, Sammy.

Larry was born on July 28, 1950, in Meadville, Pennsylvania, to Leora Jones Giewont and the late Michael Giewont. Raised on the family farm alongside his siblings Steve, Phil, Laurie, and Rick, he learned the value of hard work early on. Despite farm responsibilities, he excelled in football and basketball, earning a full football scholarship to Syracuse University. After graduation, he completed a Master’s Degree in Education and pursued his passion for working with youth. Larry spent 30 years teaching, coaching, and serving as an Athletic Director and Driver’s Education instructor in the Newfield and Spencer-Van Etten schools near Ithaca, New York. His summers were filled with youth camps, driver’s ed sessions, and side jobs like fence building and deck power-washing. After retiring in 2010, he continued giving back as a volunteer basketball coach in Taylorsville, North Carolina. Outside of work and coaching, Larry found joy in nature – mountain biking, hiking, cross-country skiing – and in good food (especially ice cream).

Larry will be remembered for his love of family, his generous spirit, and his steady presence. Whether offering a helping hand, sharing a laugh, or simply showing up when it mattered most, Larry’s quiet strength and kindness left a lasting impact on all who knew him. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and so many other lives he touched. We will all remember him not by the way his life ended, but rather by the way that it was lived - with purpose, love, and strength.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathryn A. Giewont; his children, Kevin Giewont (Lindsay) and Sarah Drucker (Zack); their mother and his former spouse, Janet Giewont; and his siblings, Laurie Messmer (Marty), Steve Giewont (Deb), and Rick Giewont (Pam). He is also survived by his four cherished grandchildren—Emery and Bryce, children of Kevin and Lindsay; and Ari and Casey, children of Sarah and Zack. He was preceded in death by his father, Michael Giewont, and his brother, Phil Giewont.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, August 1, 2025, at the Central Pavilion of Taughannock Falls State Park (1740 Taughannock Blvd.) in Trumansburg, NY.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Larry’s name to The National Parkinson’s Foundation and/or The Hospice Foundation of America.
