LaVon's obituary
LaVon passed away on July 25th 2023 in Longmont, CO.
LaVon was born in Remsen, Iowa to Emma (Salwalkie) and Aloysius Nothem. She attended school at St Mary's in Remsen and Cathedral in Sioux City before embarking on a career as a beautician in 1949. In 1953, she married Chuck Engel and raised her family primarily in Spencer, IA. In 1983, LaVon relocated to Longmont, CO.
She is survived by two sons; Curtis "Curt" Engel of Salina, KS, and Craig (Kathy) Engel of Longmont, CO. Additionally, she is survived by eight grandchildren; Adam, Whitney, Jonathan, Grant, Charlie, Kyle, Kami, and Evan, as well as seven great-grandchildren; Ellie, Avery, Piper, Owen, Jude, Logan, and Declan. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, Ernest Schumacher; brother, Aloysius Nothem Jr.; sisters, Margie Hallett, Geraldine “Gerry” Schumacher, and Lois Holtgrewe; her children Ivy, Luke, Scott “Skeeter”, and John Engel; and ex-husband Harold “Chuck” Engel.
A mass will be held at St. Michael's Church with a burial at St. Michael's cemetery, both in South Sioux City, NE the week of Memorial Day 2024.
