In 1974, an opportunity to relocate to the front range of Colorado presented itself and they moved to Longmont. In 1975 they welcomed their second son, Timothy David.

Laurel was active with 4-H as her sons became older and enrolled in the program. Laurel was also active with the Berthoud High School booster programs for band and athletics while her sons were enrolled. Howard preceded Laurel in death in 1991 from Leukemia at age 51. In that time, Laurel worked for several companies, including the Ford Motor Company and Primerica Financials. Laurel moved to Fort Collins in 1995 and the following year moved to Martin, Tennessee to be closer to her brother and especially her mother who was suffering from Alzheimer's. Laurel lived in Martin, Tennessee until 2013 when she moved to Castle Rock, Colorado.

A private inurnment service was held in November where Laurel was placed beside her husband, Howard, in Berthoud's Greenlawn Cemetery.
