Laura's obituary

Laura Burokas, age 68, of Orland Park, Illinois, passed away on August 24, 2024 after her courageous journey with ovarian cancer.

Laura was born on November 22nd, 1956 to Jurgis and Alexandra Daugvila in Chicago, IL. After Laura graduated from Maria High school in 1974, she went on to study nursing at University of Illinois at Chicago. That is where she met her husband, Gint Burokas, who were lab partners their freshman Biology 101 class.

After graduating with a degree in nursing, she started her first job at University of Chicago - Wyler Children’s Hospital. She continued her passion in nursing by studying for her graduate degree in advanced practice nursing. She then spent the next 20 years and rest of her career at Hope Children’s hospital as a pediatric Nurse Practitioner in the neurosurgery department, where she provided exceptional care for young patients and their families. She received a Daisy Lifetime Achievement Award, which recognizes nurses who have devoted their life's work to the compassionate care of others.

While building her career, she also built a family, raising two children, Eric born in 1985, and Kristina born 1988.  

In 2020, Laura retired and spent her remaining time traveling with family and friends, loving on grandchildren Lucy and Ted, and enjoying her hobby of gardening.

Laura was predeceased by her father and mother, Jurgis and Alexandra Daugvila. She is survived by her husband, Gint Burokas, children Eric Burokas and Kristina Yew (Brian), sister Rita Cechanavicius (Vytas) and brother Marius Daugvila (Cheryl) and grandkids Lucy and Ted Yew.

Visitation will be held Saturday, September 14th at 10:00 am, followed by Mass at 11:00 am at Blessed Jurgis Matulaitis Mission in the Lithuanian World Center, 14911 127th St., Lemont, IL 60439.  Burial ceremony will be private. 

 There will be a lunch reception immediately following the mass service, please RSVP on event section of website.
